  • Semi-incidental collocation learning from reading

Open Access•Inés De La Viña, Gloria Chamorro et al.•ARTICLE•Applied Linguistics Review•2026

This study examined the effect of repeated exposure on semi-incidental collocation learning, while also exploring the extent to which learner-related (prior vocabulary knowledge), and item-related factors (congruency, association strength) can modulate its effect. In an experiment using a Latin-square design, eighty-two learners of English at a university in Spain read a series of academic texts that included 18 collocations at different frequenc…

  • Incidental learning of collocations through reading an academic text

Inés De La Viña, Christina S Kim et al.•ARTICLE•IRAL - International Review of…•2025•Referencias: 60

This study investigated the incidental learning of collocations in two reading modes (reading-only (RO), reading-while-listening (RWL)), taking into account additional learner- and collocation-related predictors of learning (e.g., congruency). An academic text was used, as this could be a useful source for vocabulary learning for university-level English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners. Sixty-eight advanced Spanish EFL learners read a text c…

  • Using shared knowledge to determine ironic intent; a conversational response paradigm

Open Access•Maria Zajączkowska, Kirsten Abbot-Smith et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Child Language•2020

Mentalising has long been suggested to play an important role in irony interpretation. We hypothesised that another important cognitive underpinning of irony interpretation is likely to be children's capacity for mental set switching – the ability to switch flexibly between different approaches to the same task. We experimentally manipulated mentalising and set switching to investigate their effects on the ability of 7-year-olds to determine if a…

  • Focus

    Christina S Kim•CHAPTER•Oxford Handbook of Experimental…•2019

This chapter provides an overview of experimental investigations on focus, how focus is cued and interpreted, and how the perception of focus affects other aspects of sentence or discourse comprehension. Early studies about the impact of focusing on attention and memory continue to inform current research; since that time, experimental findings related to focus have gone hand in hand with developments in theoretical semantics and pragmatics. This…

  • Syntactic Priming without Lexical Overlap in Reading Comprehension

    Open Access•Christina S Kim, Kathleen M Carbary et al.•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•2014•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 41

Syntactic priming without lexical overlap is well-documented in language production. In contrast, reading-time comprehension studies, which typically use locally ambiguous sentences, generally find syntactic priming only with lexical overlap. This asymmetry has led some researchers to propose that distinct mechanisms underlie the comprehension and production of syntactic structure. Instead, we propose that methodological differences in how primin…

  • The Acceptability Cline in VP Ellipsis

    Open Access•Christina S Kim, Gregory M Kobele et al.•ARTICLE•Syntax•2011•Citada por: 9•Referencias: 50

This paper lays the foundations for a processing model of relative acceptability levels in verb phrase ellipsis (VPE). In the proposed model, mismatching VPE examples are grammatical but less acceptable because they violate heuristic parsing strategies. This analysis is presented in a Minimalist Grammar formalism that is compatible with standard parsing techniques. The overall proposal integrates computational assumptions about parsing with a psy…
