Old argumentative plays on a new field? Contributions from sport ethics to the ethical analysis of artificial intelligence
In the ethics of artificial intelligence, a recurring anxiety concerns the deskilling argument: the worry that delegating distinctively human tasks to AI erodes valuable capacities and there by diminishes meaning. This article argues that philosophy of sport offers underutilized but illuminating resources for analyzing this concern. Drawing ondebates over biomedical enhancement in sport ethics, I identify four argumentative strategies—centered on…
What Goals? Which Point? Whose Purpose? A Critical Engagement with Sport Internalism
In this article, I critique the dominance of internalism in sport philosophy and outline an alternative theoretical framework that integrates internal and external elements while striving to transcend the dichotomous language used to conceptualize sport. The analysis begins by claiming that internalism conflates three fundamental teleological aspects of sport: goals, point, and purposes. I argue that this conflation limits internalism’s ability t…
Sport-related concussion research agenda beyond medical science
The Concussion in Sport Group guidelines have successfully brought the attention of brain injuries to the global medical and sport research communities, and has significantly impacted brain injury-related practices and rules of international sport. Despite being the global repository of state-of-the-art science, diagnostic tools and guides to clinical practice, the ensuing consensus statements remain the object of ethical and sociocultural critic…
Whose interests? Which solidarity? Challenges of developing a European Super League
Since the 1990s, rumours of a European Super League (ESL), comprised of the major clubs from England, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain, have mounted. According to these rumours, this new league would break away from the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA). Many clubs would operate outside the current European federative system, abandoning their national leagues and football federations. An ESL thus conceived would present a menacing a…

Return of the Grasshopper
In this sequel to Bernard Suits’ timeless classic philosophical work The Grasshopper: Games, Life and Utopia, published in its full and unabridged form for the first time, Suits continues to explore some of our most fundamental philosophical questions, including the value of sport and games, and their relationship to the good life. In Return of the Grasshopper, Suits puts his theoretical cards on the table, exploring the in-depth implications of …
The Influence of Power on Leisure
Many people experience domination as they encounter oppression and marginalization because of power differentials limiting their leisure. We rely on Foucault for guidance to examine connections between power and opportunities for people to be included in leisure and recognize that, like Foucault, we experience privilege. Considering such privilege, we explore power and people connections, scrutinize ways power influences leisure, and examine meth…
The Synergy of the Social Justice and Inclusive Leisure Continuum
A critical examination of leisure in modernity
We provide a critical approach to current colloquial and scholarly understandings of leisure focusing on instrumental understandings of leisure in modern, liberal-democratic society since these instrumental understandings (e.g., diversion, distinction, consumerism, and restoration for work) create confusion about the meaning of leisure. We identify that (a) emphasis on instrumental thinking prevailing in modern society moves people away from embr…
Urban parks as spaces to pursue virtuous character, friendship, and contemplation
Given the complexity of meaning of urban parks in our lives, philosophical inquiry may provide a way to help understand what good urban parks are and what role urban parks can play in people's lives. Our desire to understand underlying meanings of today's urban parks led us to explore Aristotle's writings The Nicomachean Ethics. Hence, we discuss connections between Aristotle's ideas associated with virtuous character, friendship, and contemplati…
Utopia and the meaning of life
In this paper, we explore the existential aspects of Bernard Suits’ Utopia. We first provide a philosophical analysis of the concept of ‘utopia.’ Then, we analyze two key distinctions in Suits’ work: (a) technical versus autotelic rationality, and (b) play and game playing. By drawing on the analysis of both distinctions, we contrast two types of approaches to life. One is guided by the imperatives of instrumental reason, the other by those of ‘l…

Football transfers and moral responsibility
The main goal of this paper is to analyse the concept of social responsibility in sport management. By drawing on Hans Jonas, I shall analyse the concept of ‘corporate social responsibility’ in order to analyse several ambivalent cases within contemporary soccer such as the transfer of Gareth Bale to Real Madrid or the awarding of the 2022 World Cup to Qatar
A Hermeneutical Analysis of the InternalistApproachin the Philosophy of Sport
In this paper, we make a hermeneutical analysis of internalism, the dominant tradition in the philosophy of sports. In order to accomplish this, we identify the prejudices that guide the internalist view of sports, namely the Platonic-Analytic prejudice introduced by Suits, one of the forefathers of internalism. Then, we critically analyze four consequences of following such a prejudice: a) its reductive nature, b) the production of a unrealistic…
Sport and democracy
This paper argues that sport may be a useful educational tool for our liberal-democratic societies. To demonstrate this claim, we first analyse the controversial issue of whether or not sports are serious activities linked to the larger society and their values. Second, we argue that sport has always had such a connection with society since ancient times. Third, we show that the origin of both politics and philosophy was linked to several forces …
Sport and Ethics of Weak Thought
The so-called “weak thought”, theorized by the Italian postmodernist philosopher Gianni Vattimo (born in 1936), considered one of the most important Italian philosophers, has dismantled the main concepts on which Western philosophy was based (that is, the notion of Truth, God, Reason, an absolute foundation to thought, etc.). This philosophy, which is inspired by Nietzsche’s nihilism, by Heidegger, and by the philosophy of hermeneutics and decons…
