How do restrictions on opioid prescribing, harm reduction, and treatment coverage policies relate to opioid overdose deaths in the United States in 2013–2020? An application of a new state opioid poli…
The relationship of medical and recreational cannabis laws with opioid misuse and opioid use disorder in the USA
Comparing individuals in MCL alone states to those in states without such laws, we found an inconsistent pattern of decreased odds of opioid outcomes, which were more pronounced among people reporting cannabis use. The pattern did not hold for individuals in RCL states. In line with a substitution-oriented perspective, findings suggests that MCLs may be associated with reductions in opioid use among people using cannabis but additional work to re…
Increasing Student Engagement in Quantitative Public Health Coursework Through Tailored Nudges
Student engagement predicts favorable educational outcomes. Nudges are increasingly applied to higher education contexts to promote engagement. A randomized study in a large quantitative analysis public health course deployed nudges catered to students’ intrinsic motivations. Participants ( n = 127) self-selected into motivation groups (Learners [ n = 46], Doers [ n = 48], or Performers [ n = 33]); half were randomized to receive four nudges tail…
Gender Differences in Cannabis Outcomes After Recreational Cannabis Legalization
Association Between Legal Access to Medical Cannabis and Frequency of Non-Medical Prescription Opioid Use Among U.S. Adults
Naloxone expansion is not associated with increases in adolescent heroin use and injection drug use
Global Pain and Aging
Chronic pain intensity is not an inevitable consequence of chronological age, but the consequence of potential selection effects and lower activity levels combined with individual-level health and country-level wealth. Our findings suggest further investigation of health conditions and country affluence settings as potential targets of medical and policy interventions aiming to prevent, reduce, or manage chronic pain among older patients and agin…
Association Between Recreational Marijuana Legalization in the United States and Changes in Marijuana Use and Cannabis Use Disorder From 2008 to 2016
This study's findings suggest that although marijuana legalization advanced social justice goals, the small post-RML increase in risk for CUD among respondents aged 12 to 17 years and increased frequent use and CUD among adults 26 years or older in this study are a potential public health concern. To undertake prevention efforts, further studies are warranted to assess how these increases occur and to identify subpopulations that may be especiall…
Associations between state-level policy liberalism, cannabis use, and cannabis use disorder from 2004 to 2012
Evaluating the impact and equity of a tobacco-free pharmacy law on retailer density in New York City neighbourhoods
NYC's tobacco-free pharmacy law substantially reduces tobacco retailer density overall, but the impact is not equal across neighbourhoods. In order to minimise disparities in the tobacco retail environment, local governments considering a similar ban should supplement this strategy with other retailer restrictions to achieve equitable outcomes
Adolescents’ and Parents’ Attitudes Toward Adolescent Clinical Trial Participation
Little is known about how adolescents' and parents' thoughts about participation in clinical trials change over time. In this study, adolescent (14-17 years)-parent dyads were asked about willingness to participate in a hypothetical reproductive health study. A year later, they were asked how their thoughts about the study had changed. Qualitative responses were coded and analyzed using framework analysis. Thirty-two percent of adolescents and 18…
Effects of the Affordable Care Act on Private Insurance Coverage and Treatment of Behavioral Health Conditions in Young Adults
Objectives. To assess changes in private insurance coverage and behavioral treatment of people aged 19 to 25 years and 26 to 35 years following the 2010 Affordable Care Act (ACA) dependent care provision and 2014 insurance reforms. Methods. We extracted data from the 2008 to 2016 US National Surveys on Drug Use and Health. We used an adjusted difference-in-differences approach to assess effects of age group on change in coverage. Replications in …
US Traffic Fatalities, 1985–2014, and Their Relationship to Medical Marijuana Laws
Objectives. To determine the association of medical marijuana laws (MMLs) with traffic fatality rates. Methods. Using data from the 1985–2014 Fatality Analysis Reporting System, we examined the association between MMLs and traffic fatalities in multilevel regression models while controlling for contemporaneous secular trends. We examined this association separately for each state enacting MMLs. We also evaluated the association between marijuana …
Prevalence of marijuana use does not differentially increase among youth after states pass medical marijuana laws
Complicated grief after suicide bereavement and other causes of death
The authors compared baseline demographic characteristics, clinical features, and grief-related thoughts, feelings, and behaviors of individuals bereaved by suicide, accident/homicide and natural causes participating in a complicated grief (CG) treatment clinical trial. Severity of CG and depression and current depression diagnosis did not vary by loss type. After adjusting for baseline demographic features, time since death and relationship to t…
State Medical Marijuana Laws and the Prevalence of Opioids Detected Among Fatally Injured Drivers
Objectives. To assess the association between medical marijuana laws (MMLs) and the odds of a positive opioid test, an indicator for prior use. Methods. We analyzed 1999–2013 Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) data from 18 states that tested for alcohol and other drugs in at least 80% of drivers who died within 1 hour of crashing (n = 68 394). Within-state and between-state comparisons assessed opioid positivity among drivers crashing in s…
