  • Supernovae and Single-Year Anomalies in the Atmospheric Radiocarbon Record

Open Access•Michael Dee, Benjamin Pope et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2017•Citada por: 6•Referencias: 41

Single-year spikes in radiocarbon production are caused by intense bursts of radiation from space. Supernovae emit both high-energy particle and electromagnetic radiation, but it is the latter that is most likely to strike the atmosphere all at once and cause a surge in 14 C production. In the 1990s, it was claimed that the supernova in 1006 CE produced exactly this effect. With the 14 C spikes in the years 775 and 994 CE now attributed to extrem…

  • Climatic changes and social transformations in the Near East and North Africa during the ‘long’ 4th millennium BC

Open Access•Joanne Clarke, Nicholas Brooks et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Science Reviews•2016

This paper explores the possible links between rapid climate change (RCC) and social change in the Near East and surrounding regions (Anatolia, central Syria, southern Israel, Mesopotamia, Cyprus and eastern and central Sahara) during the ‘long’ 4th millennium (∼4500–3000) BC. Twenty terrestrial and 20 marine climate proxies are used to identify long-term trends in humidity involving transitions from humid to arid conditions and vice versa. The f…

  • Old World megadroughts and pluvials during the Common Era

    Open Access•Edward R Cook, Robin Seager et al.•ARTICLE•Science Advances•2015

An atlas of megadroughts in Europe and in the Mediterranean Basin during the Common Era provides insights into climate variability.

  • The Climate and Environment of Byzantine Anatolia

    J Haldon, Neil Roberts et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Interdisciplinary…•2014•Citada por: 13•Referencias: 20

The integration of high-resolution archaeological, textual, and environmental data with longer-term, low-resolution data affords greater precision in identifying some of the causal relationships underlying societal change. Regional and microregional case studies about the Byzantine world-in particular, Anatolia, which for several centuries was the heart of that world-reveal many of the difficulties that researchers face when attempting to assess …

  • Marine04 Marine Radiocarbon Age Calibration, 0–26 Cal Kyr Bp

    Open Access•Konrad A Hughen, Mike G L Baillie et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2004•Citada por: 99•Referencias: 40

New radiocarbon calibration curves, IntCal04 and Marine04, have been constructed and internationally ratified to replace the terrestrial and marine components of IntCal98. The new calibration data sets extend an additional 2000 yr, from 0–26 cal kyr BP (Before Present, 0 cal BP = AD 1950), and provide much higher resolution, greater precision, and more detailed structure than IntCal98. For the Marine04 curve, dendrochronologically-dated tree-ring…

  • The Bronze Age Eruption of Thera

    W Manning, Sturt Manning•ARTICLE•Journal of Mediterranean…•1988•Citada por: 20

This paper presents and integrated chronological analysis of the archaeological, and other scientific evidence related to the absolute dating of the Bronze Age eruption of Thera, and of contemporary Aegean and Mediterranean cultures. The resulting composite interpretation is that the traditionally accepted date for the eruption ca. 1500 BC, and the traditionally accepted Aegean chronology, are both too low and must be reassessed significantly. In…
