Cinzia Bonato. Molto più che pazienti
Early modern Genoa boasted one of the most effective systems of public assistance in Europe. This article examines the main phases of the historiographical debate on these issues from its beginning in the 1950s to the most recent developments
Rebirth of a City
In traditional historiography, Milan, like other Italian cities, began to decline in the seventeenth century as its merchants were no longer able to compete with their English, Dutch, and French counterparts. Urban manufacturers virtually collapsed and only the countryside showed signs of vitality. The A. reconsiders this conventional picture of seventeenth-century Lombardy, highlighting new evidence that portrays Milan as surprisingly resilient,…
Crisis and transformation
The decline of Milan and the other Italian cities in the seventeenth century has been ascribed to the inelasticity of urban society and the economy. In the face of competition from the new Atlantic powers, and after the European crisis of 1619-22, the economy of the Italian cities, dominated by the archaic guild hierarchies, would suddenly stagnate and begin a progressive decline. This article argues that Milan's inability to compete with the str…
