The Blueberry Syndrome
Too-inclusive and too-rigid classifications of childhood emotional disorders have led diagnosticians to overlook conditions which do not fit under accepted labels. Recently this author has encountered a hitherto unnamed disorder which he calls the Blueberry syndrome, and which shares some features with autism, childhood psychosis and mental retardation, but also differs significantly from all of these. Its principal manifestations are lack of spe…
The Aquarium as a Therapeutic AID
Keeping fish in an aquarium is a highly popular hobby despite the fact that fish are not contact animals like dogs and cats. Practical and easy to keep, aquaria provide an opportunity to observe a microcosm, behaviors involving competition, mating, reproduction, territorial defense, and care of the young. Dominoes as a Therapeutic Device
Dominoes is a useful game for a therapist — whose child patient has temporarily become verbally unproductive. It can provide information about both personality dynamics and developmental status, including neurophysiological maturity. Played in two parts, the standard game and a projective approach in which the child constructs whatever he wishes with the dominoes and then tells a story about or associates to his construction, the game can provide…
Pets and Personality Development
Man has had animal companions since prehistoric times, as reflected in folklore, legends, and literature. In an urban, technological society such as ours, closeness to animals can reduce alienation. Development over the life cycle can be favorably influenced by close association with an animal companion, particularly during middle childhood and old age. The development of empathy, self-esteem, self-control, and autonomy can be promoted in childre…

Mental Deficiency on Skid Row
The early studies of the intelligence of the homeless men found a high percentage of “feeble-mindedness.” Recent research, however, indicates there are few mentally defective on the Row and that the intelligence of the Skid Row man is fairly representative of the socio-economic group which he represents. This disagreement is compounded by the fact that the current population on the Skid Row is much older, sicker, and emotionally less stable than …

Rethinking the Selection of Intellectually Gifted Children
There is general agreement that intellectually gifted children should be encouraged to develop their potentialities. However, a great deal of evidence indicates that currently used intelligence tests are not equally efficient in detecting high levels of ability in the various social classes. It is proposed that the highest in each class should be selected for special training
