Sarah Coakley on Aquinas, Wittgenstein, and the 1980s Yale School
At first I mistook The Broken Body for the second volume of Coakley's systematic theology.1 Rather, this book collects studies that will feed into the systematics. Those who teach or write about Coakley will want to read the whole book. Those who find her a source of pleasure or inspiration will want to use the table of contents to read selected essays. Many of these essays have appeared in prominent or out-of-the-way publications or circulated a…
Prayer, Christoformity, and the Author
You should read this book —and assign at least part of it in class (the most quotable quotes cluster, usefully, in the gorgeous Prelude)—because there is really nothing else like it. It really is an essay “On the Trinity.” And it really does contribute to the sexuality debates without attempting to solve them in their current terms. Meanwhile, the plates alone will justify the price. I find myself reverting to Coakley's view when students ask abo…

Aquinas on Natural Law and the Virtues in Biblical Context
Marriagelike homosexual relationships expose a division among ethicists following Aquinas. Those emphasizing natural law may call such relationships unnatural; those emphasizing the virtues may approve of relationships fostering love and justice. Natural law, the virtues, and homosexuality all show up in Aquinas's Commentary on Romans —untranslated and hardly cited. Romans 1:18 opens a discussion of justice. Verse 20 provides Aquinas's chief warr…
Thomas Aquinas and Karl Barth
This book is a work of systematic theology that provides a fresh interpretation of Aquinas on the nature of theology, and uncovers and explores theological affinities between Aquinas and Protestant theologian Karl Barth.
Supplementing Barth on Jews and Gender
Karl Barth leaves room by his own principles for further, even different thinking about Jews and gender (and, as a corollary, about homosexuality) than he records in the Dogmatics. Now that Marquardt, Klappert, Sonderegger, Soulen, and others have offered sympathetic critiques from a generally Barthian point of view, and Eberhard Busch has exhaustively laid to rest any biographical questions of Barth’s relation to the Jewish people in his 1996 bo…
Thomas and Barth in Convergence on Romans 1
This article summarizes research on the natural knowledge of God and the construal of sacred doctrine in question one of the Summa Theologiae and chapter 1 of Thomas's Romans commentary, with a comparison to Karl Barth. It takes as its challenge and motivation to uncover some of the affinities (indeed, to create a convergence) between Karl Barth and Thomas Aquinas just where both modern Barthians and modern Thomists would have thought convergence…
How the Virtues of an Interpreter Presuppose and Perfect Hermeneutics
This essay enlists Thomas Aquinas to enrich a late twentieth-century retrieval of the literal reading of biblical narrative in the Christian tradition. It argues that the Summa theologiae can be read so that the sensus litteralis, far from promoting one predeterminate meaning for a text, promotes instead a certain ordered diversity of readings, and that the evaluation of readings belongs largely elsewhere than in hermeneutics. It opposes both tho…
