Between ‘Oriental’ and ‘Blacks So Called’, 1688–1788
This chapter discusses postcolonial theory in its application to 18th-century British literature, which usually separates ‘Orientals’ and ‘Blacks’ into two distinct subjects of enquiry. The subject of abolition is the Negro from sub-Saharan Africa, while the subject of Orientalism is the inhabitant of India, the Levant, the Barbary Coast, and the East Indies. Actresses and the Economics of Celebrity, 1700–1800
The theatre stands at the crux of urban life in eighteenth-century England, and women figured at its very centre. Star players such as Elizabeth Barry, the subject of the epigraph above, linked public fame to romantic affection through the magnetic theatrical appeal of a palpable female presence. She and …

Showcasing the work of twenty-one leading …

"Savage" Mothers
A colony is to the mother-country as a member to the body, deriving its action and its strength from the general principle of vitality; receiving from the body, and communicating to it, all the benefits and evils of health and disease; liable in dangerous maladies to sharp applications, of which the body however must partake the pain; and exposed if incurably tainted, to amputation, by which the body likewise will be mutilated

The of this collection of essays, as its editors declare in their introduction, is revision or problematization of period, canon, tradition, and genre in eighteenth-century literary studies (p. 14). The twelve essays gathered by the editors are consistently provocative and fresh, almost always strongly and lucidly written, …

Juvenal, Swift, and The Folly of Love
W HEN SAMUEL JOHNSON observed that some of Juvenal's satires were too gross for imitation,' he must certainly have included among them Juvenal's virulent attack on women. The Sixth Satire, first fully translated into English in 1647, was recognized in Restoration and eighteenth-century literature as a masterpiece of venom.2 Other satirists placed Juvenal in the misogynous tradition and warned men to heed his advice; these included William Walsh i…
"By These Words I was Sustained"
A spiritual autobiography frequently creates its own structure; that is, spiritual autobiographer documents and affirms providential design he believes gives order and meaning to his life. Biblical narratives may suggest paradigms on which human models description of his journey to his heavenly home and to his new identity as a child of God. The particular Puritan version of this structure became a specific generic paradigm, and in many ways, Joh…
