  • The Public Curriculum of Orderly Images

    Elizabeth Vallance•ARTICLE•Educational Researcher•1995•Citada por: 6•Referencias: 2

There is a public curriculum inherent in the orderly images, and in the order in which these images are presented and seen in art museums. This voluntary public-access “curriculum,” selected differently by each visitor, offers both interesting challenges and useful metaphors for educators working in more structured settings. School educators, like art museum educators, help to develop students' abilities to see and hear the stories visible and ac…

  • Radical Curriculum Theory Reconsidered

Elizabeth Vallance, Peter S Hlebowitsh•ARTICLE•History of Education Quarterly•1994•Citada por: 3

This work offers a detailed critique of various radical interpretations of curriculum history and curriculum theory. Hlebowitsh seeks to show how the progressive experimentalist tradition in curriculum studies has been unjustly characterised by reconceptualist theorists as somehow rooted in notions of social control and social efficiency. In their fight against what they see as the behaviourism inherent in traditional curriculum theory, the radic…

  • The practical uses of curriculum theory

    Elizabeth Vallance•ARTICLE•Theory Into Practice•1982•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 5

It is hard not to feel a certain envy for those professions whose labels are self-explanatory. People seem to have a rough idea of what an architect, a bricklayer, a teacher, a jeweler, a cabaret singer, or a lawyer (for example) does, and can imagine the skills required and the kinds of settings in which these people work. The vividness of these images seems somehow to legitimize the activity; the practical uses of bricklaying (or indeed of caba…

  • A Deadpan Look at Humor in Curriculum Discourse (Or, the Serious versus the Solemn in Education)

    Elizabeth Vallance•ARTICLE•Curriculum Inquiry•1980•Referencias: 2

I will begin on a solemn note. Judging by the massive evidence provided by publications and conference papers of professionals in the field of curriculum (and indeed in all of education), there is a marked tendency to take ourselves immensely seriously. Often, of course, this is the only appropriate stance; but still, it is remarkable how unrelentingly somber we are in our assessments of the educational scene and in our reactions to one another's…

  • Backward-Looking Criticism as a Forward-Looking Concept

    Elizabeth Vallance•ARTICLE•Curriculum Inquiry•1980•Referencias: 2

A truly clever response to Professor Werner's article would be an editorial criticism of it. I will not attempt to do one. For one thing, I hesitate to engage in the discovery of turtles-upon-turtles in the space of a short essay. Besides, that kind of brevity would hardly do the article justice, especially since curriculum criticism is too new to have mastered the pithy succinctness that some reviewers of, say, literature have mastered. At least…
