Employment and Occupation Effects on Depressive Symptoms in Older Americans
The mental health benefit of working, among persons aged 65 and older, may be due to the healthy worker effect. However, the particular job sector in which older workers are employed matters. Socioeconomic status and financial versus personal motivations for working are potentially important explanations for differences
Health behaviors, risk factors, and health indicators associated with cigarette use in Mexican Americans
BACKGROUND: Cigarette smokers often engage in other, potentially deleterious, health behaviors. Such behaviors have not been well documented in Mexican American smokers. METHODS: Data from the Southwestern sample of the Hispanic Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (HHANES) were employed to investigate differences in health behaviors, risk factors and health indicators between cigarette smokers and nonsmokers among Mexican Americans. Differenc…
Hearing loss and hearing aid use in Hispanic adults
Data from the Hispanic Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were employed to investigate the prevalence of hearing loss and hearing aid use in Mexican-American, Cuban-American, and Puerto Rican adults. Hearing loss was 6 to 14 times more prevalent in older (ages 54 to 74) vs younger (ages 20 through 34) subjects. Cuban Americans and Mexican Americans tended to have a similar prevalence of hearing loss, whereas Puerto Ricans had markedly lower …
Skill, Craft and Class
Common to a number of otherwise divergent writings is the attempt to offer a theory of how the changing organization of industrial production impinges upon average skill levels in the work force. From this basis, generalizations are made about the future development of the class structure of advanced capitalism. This article argues that such a simple relation between skill and class structure is unlikely. Among the many factors which intervene be…
The Regional Factor in the Further Education and Employment of Male School-Leavers
The note draws attention to certain aspects in which adolescent life-histories vary from region to region. In general the likelihood of recruitment to part-time rather than full-time study is greatest in English regions which are subject to economic decline. This appears to mirror the relative availability to school-leavers of conventional apprenticeship. Scotland, Wales and South-East England show important differences from this pattern due to t…
The 'Alternative Route'-Social Change and Opportunity in Technical Education
Two views about the amount of opportunity available through technical education are contrasted. In popular discussions the system figures as an 'alternative route' to middle class occupations. In sociological literature, however, it is dismissed as a significant source of opportunity. A review is presented of important but neglected changes in the organization of courses and the recruitment of young men to them. It is shown that both class and ed…
Society and the Adolescent Self-Image
Class Differentials in Educational Opportunity and Promotions from the Ranks
A re-examination is made of the argument that slightly improved class differentials in full-time education have been offset by a decline in chances of promotion during a career. Past support for this idea has been drawn from age group comparisons usually in the context of surveys of managers. Census data giving the distribution of terminal education ages in the population are used to show that there are in fact important educational differences b…
