Somatic Care Performances: Turtle Disco and Tendings
This essay discusses accessibility, community, bodily pain, and writing engagement, as well as meanings of “dramaturgy” in somatic and improvisation contexts. We work together as tender bodymindspirits—never just one, always interwoven—in complex inner and outer worlds. As a group of people working together, we use writing to find paths for witnessing experience. We created performances for and with each other. These are all small practices, ofte…

Performance, Climate, and Critical Art
Performance, Climate, and Critical Art VK Preston (bio) My essay for the print edition of Theatre Journal (72.2, June 2020), "Queer and Indigenous Art: Performing Ice Times in Climate Crisis," engages with performance and video work from the Arctic that addresses climate warming. It began with my experience as an audience member at Kiinalik: These Sharp Tools during its opening run in the heart of Toronto's queer neighborhood in 2017. The product…
Queer and Indigenous Art: Performing Ice Times in Climate Crisis
This essay takes up cryotemporalities, or "ice times," addressing climate anxiety and feeling regarding measuring, surviving, and anticipating climate crises. Buddies in Bad Times's production Kiinalik: These Sharp Tools (2017) grapples with changing climate, sexuality, colonization, whiteness, and the suppression of Inuit cultural practices in north and south. Studying performance and media works by Laakkuluk Williamson Bathory, Evalyn Parry, Ja…

This approach to the public history of the witch tourist district investigates contemporary assurance that acts (or spells) do not do, taking up tourist sites and souvenirs in “Witch City.”
Baroque Relations
This chapter approaches dance archives and reenactment through analyses of the use of precious metals in drawings of dancers by the seventeenth-century French artist Daniel Rabel. Examining the artist’s album at the Louvre, Preston studies the visual effects of images and materials, testifying to French reimaginings of Indigenous performance practices in early seventeenth-century ballets in Paris. Turning to verse and livrets by René Bordier and …

Tendering the Flesh: The ABCs of Dave St-Pierre's Contemporary Utopias
Montreal choreographer Dave St-Pierre's La Pornographie des âmes (2004) launched his controversial dance-theatre trilogy, Sociology and Other Contemporary Utopias. His signature abecedery from Pornographie (A for Affect, B for Bruise, etc.) is remobilized to deploy the affective commotion of his remappings of social relations in provocative stagings of queerness, dis/ability, and desire
