Localising the Sustainable Development Goals. A Place‐Based Analysis of Sustainable Development in Rural and Urban Areas
There are increasing calls for a place‐based approach towards the Sustainable Development Goals that show their territorial diversity at subnational level. Based on 33 indicators, covering 13 SDGs and aggregated in three sub‐indexes (economy, social and environment), this paper develops a Sustainable Development Index for Rural and Urban Areas of Ireland (SDI‐RUI) with high resolution data gathered at Small Area level (18,919 units for Ireland). …
Smartphone GIS
Smartphones are increasingly becoming embedded in geography curriculums, meaning research is needed to gather insights from the student perspective to guide best practice for optimised implementation across diverse cohorts. This is particularly important in the context of ensuring that UN Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education) is met. In this article, we report on the role that student competency in technology (i.e. everyday user vers…

Incorporating host-parasite biotic factors in species distribution models
Understanding where ticks are found, and the drivers of their geographic distributions is imperative for successful epidemiological precautions. Predictive models of tick distributions are often projected using solely abiotic (e.g. climate) variables, despite the strong biotic interaction that host species undoubtedly have with parasitic species. We used species distribution modelling to project the distribution of Ixodes ricinus in Ireland and t…
Mapping Community Perceptions in Ports through Public Participatory Geographic Information Systems (PPGIS)
Public Participatory Geographic Information Systems (PPGIS) is a tool that identifies and maps community perceptions through participatory mapping activities to increase community empowerment and engagement in public processes. Ports play a significant socioeconomic role at local, national, and international scales, but their inclusion in PPGIS has been relatively understudied compared to other planning sectors. The aims of this study were to cre…
Active learning using a smartphone app
Opportunities to deploy digital technologies to research agendas and active learning in tertiary education are becoming more widespread. Despite this, many research techniques are still taught using traditional “pen-and-paper” methodologies. In this article, we report on a strategy for integrating mobile technology into our large (275+) module GG1015 Applied Geography, via the use of smartphones and the ESRI Collector for ArcGIS app. Focus groups…
Deliberating Life and Death
Dubitatio is a complex figure of speech in which a speaker explicitly weighs her or his options in the course of making a difficult decision. Dubitatio was typically used to display a protagonist's character as revealed in her or his decision-making. In Philippians 1:22–26, Paul uses dubitatio to draw the readers into his deliberations whether to commit suicide in prison. In so doing, he not only reveals to them his own character but their charac…
Niche Theory and Models
Predicting potential and actual distributions of species has become an active research area in biogeography. Recent debate about the appropriate term for these models – “niche models” or “species distribution models” – stems from confusion over the original niche theory on which they are both based. While niche theory itself has evolved in ecology, there are three main niche concepts that have remained the most relevant for niche models. These co…

Coping with Prejudice. 1 Peter in Social-Psychological Perspective

Coping with Prejudice
Paul A. Holloway draws on the findings of social psychology to argue that 1 Peter marks one of the earliest attempts by a Christian author to craft a comprehensive response to anti-Christian prejudice and the persecution it engendered.
Alius Paulus
Interpreters of Paul's letter to the Philippians continue to struggle to understand the place of Paul's promise to send Timothy (Phil 2.19–24) in the overall rhetoric of the letter. However, if one reads Philippians as a letter of consolation the problems associated with this text can be solved. In particular, it becomes evident that the imprisoned and possibly soon-to-be-executed Paul offers Timothy to his anxious readers as his replacement, as …
Thanks for the Memories
According to the natural sense of the Greek, Phil 1.3 should be translated something like, ‘I give thanks to my God for every remembrance of you’. Scholars have rejected this interpretation without explanation, presumably because the thought of Paul thanking God for pleasant memories seems too odd even to be considered. Philippians, however, is a letter of consolation, and pleasant memories were a common source of consolation in Hellenistic–Roman…
Nihil inopinati accidisse – ‘Nothing unexpected has happened’
1 Peter was written for the dual purpose of exhortation and consolation. Recent studies have focused on the former of these purposes (exhortation); this article attends to the latter (consolation). It argues that the last section of 1 Peter (4.12ff.), which since Perdelwitz has been identified as a concluding ‘Trostwort’, develops at length the popular consolatory topos ‘nihil inopinati accidisse’ (‘nothing unexpected has happened’). This topos w…
