A Review of the Tripartite Structure of Subjective Well-Being
Subjective well-being (SWB) comprises a global evaluation of life satisfaction and positive and negative affective reactions to one’s life. Despite the apparent simplicity of this tripartite model, the structure of SWB remains in question. In the present review, the authors identify five prominent structural conceptualizations in which SWB is cast variously as three separate components, a hierarchical construct, a causal system, a composite, and …
Adolescent Non-Involvement in Multiple Risk Behaviors
Based on the conceptualization of successful development as the joint maximization of desirable outcomes and minimization of undesirable outcomes (Baltes, 1997 Baltes , P. B. (1997). On the incomplete architecture of human ontogeny. American Psychologist , 32, 366–380.[Crossref] , [Google Scholar]), the present study examined connections between adolescent non-involvement in multiple risk behaviors and positive developmental status. Results from …

Adult attachment and sexual behavior
The relations between adult attachment processes and sexuality were examined in a community sample of 792 young adults (327 men and 465 women) from the Niagara region of Canada. Participants completed questionnaires that included Simpson’s (1990) measure of adult attachment, self‐reported physical attractiveness, erotophilia, and a variety of sexual behavior measures (e.g., number of sexual partners, age of first sexual experience, frequency of s…
Employment Status and Health in Young Adults
In a sample of young Canadian adults, questionnaire data indicated that both unemployment and selfreported underemployment represent health risks, as defined by subjectively rated health, experienced symptoms and illness measures. While health behaviours, including substance use, diet and exercise, medical compliance and unsafe driving practices contributed independently to health outcomes, they did not explain the linkage between employment stat…
Excessive appetites
Perceived Mental Illness and Diminished Responsibility
Subjects read case reports of an accident, in which the severity of consequences was varied, and where the protagonist was described as “normal” or as exhibiting “symptoms” of alcohol abuse, paranoid delusions, acute anxiety. Although greater mental illness was perceived in the alcoholism and paranoid cases, greater responsibility was also attributed to the alcoholic, and more severe penalties were recommended in both cases. Greater responsibilit…
Criteria Measures of Drug-Using Behavior
Four measures of college student drug use are investigated: frequency of cannabis use, time as a user, range of polydrug experimentation and self-reported adverse consequences of use. Distributed properties of the measures are presented, with particular problems in the frequency of use criterion. Intercorrelations and factor analyses support the relative independence of the criteria, with substantial overlap only between range and time. Multiple …
Decisions about Drug Use
36 pre-established groups of 4 male or female students (in Ontario) who were users and non-users of cannabis were administered choice-dilemmas involving drug-related risks and non-drug risks. After discussion to a group consensus decision in homogeneous groups of users and non-users or heterogeneous groups, individual choices were again assessed. General trends suggested riskier group and individual choices were made by users, by males, by users …
Rotter's Generalized Expectancies as Predictors of Helping Behavior
96 college students were individually solicited for help, where the immediacy and the need for help were varied. They were then placed in a bystander intervention situation involving an emergency or a non-emergency. The Rotter and Levenson measures of internal control predicted helping, particularly in high demand situations. The data regarding Rotter's expectancies for interpersonal trust were inconsistent
Patterns of College Student Drug Use
A repeated-measures study over a Canadian academic year (6 mo.) examined personal and social predictors of patterns of college freshman drug use among 151 users. Frequency of use, stage of use, and self-reported significant adverse consequences of use were predicted by high social support for use, low expectations for goal attainment, high personal functions of use, and high attitudinal tolerance of use. Changes in personal and social variables o…
