Uniform, circular, and shallow enamel pitting in hominins
This study explores a particular form of enamel pitting originally identified in Paranthropus robustus. We call this uniform, circular, and shallow (UCS) pitting to distinguish it from more irregular and nonuniform defects often associated with enamel hypoplasia. We pose the hypothesis that UCS pitting is unique to the genus Paranthropus. We test this by investigating hominin dental remains from the ca. 3.4 Ma to ca. 1.1 Ma fossiliferous sequence…
Homo erectus technological behaviors during the Middle Pleistocene Transition
Re-evaluating the human remains from El Bosquet cave (Mont-ral, Tarragona, Spain)
During the early development of archaeology in Spain, many of the materials obtained from excavations were later forgotten in museum deposits. However, re-investigation of these collections with contemporary methodologies can still contribute valuable knowledge. This study presents the case of El Bosquet Cave (Mont-ral, Tarragona, Spain), located in the Northeastern Iberian Peninsula. This cave was excavated and documented in 1956 and the recover…
Palaeolithic archaeology in the conglomerate caves of north-eastern Iberia
Large, conglomerate caves in north-eastern Iberia have been significant places since the Neolithic through to historical times; however, their significance during the Palaeolithic has barely been explored. This project is the first systematic study of the use of these iconic geological landmarks among Pleistocene hunter-gatherers
Gigapixel-like imaging strategies for dental anthropology
Exploring the utility of optical microscopy versus scanning electron microscopy for the quantification of dental microwear
Rainbow in the dark. The identification of diagnostic projectile impact features on rock crystal
Biocultural diversity in Late Pleistocene/Early Holocene Africa
OBJECTIVES: The dentition of Olduvai Hominid 1 (OH1) exhibits an anomalous pattern of dental wear that was originally attributed to either intentional cultural modification (filing) or plant processing behaviors. A differential diagnosis of the wear and assessment of the biological affinity of OH1 is presented. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Macroscopic and microscopic observations of all labial and buccal tooth surfaces were undertaken to assess wear pa…
Inferring childhood dietary maturation using buccal and occlusal deciduous molar microwear
