It represents a clay vault positioned within a filled pit on a pillow with a wooden frame, with a combined furnace an…
On the Use of Bone Points of the Early Neolithic Settlement Mergen 6 (According to Traceological Research and Experiment)
Purpose. The practice of applying images (tattoos) to the human body has a long history, encompassing both traditional cultures and modern forms. The use of points made from tubular bones of birds and small animals was documented in Eurasia and America as early as the Mesolithic-Eneolithic period.Results. A typological and t…
To the periodisation of the Transitional Period from the Bronze Epoch to Early Iron Age in the lower Ishim River basin
In the end of the 1st millennium BCE, in the lower Ishim River basin, the events were taking place that turned out to be groundbreaking in the history of Western Siberia. As in the bordering southern-taiga and forest-steppe territories of the Tobol and Irtysh river basins, under the changing environmental conditions and increasing migra-tion flow from the taiga regions, there begins the development of cultures precursive to the establishment of t…
Vertical Burials of Northern Eurasia
At this point, eight burials with vertically positioned bodies in the burial chamber are known in Northern Eurasia from Central Europe to the eastern border of Western Siberia. There is one “stand up” burial at each of the following sites: near the village of Zarechnoe on the Ina River in the Ob River area, in the Tobol River area near the village of Pegan, at Ust-Aleika 5 burial ground on the Upper Ob River, and Central Europe, 80 km north of Be…
Zhuravlevo complex of the of Borki 1 hillfort in the Lower Ishim River Basin
At the end of the Late Bronze Age, there were events taking place in the history of the Eurasian steppes that manifested the beginning of the formation of cultures of the Scythian type. These processes, in many aspects triggered by the climate changes, spread into both southern taiga and forest-steppe territories of Western Siberia. In understanding the processes of the transitional period from the Bronze to Early Iron Age and beginning of the Ea…
The Neolithic and Early Metal complexes of the Chepkul 5 settlement in the North of the An-dreevskaya Lake System
The problems of development of the early Neolithic and Early Metal Age complexes in the Tobol-Ishim interfluve are still insufficiently studied. A certain understanding of the cultural and historical processes that took place during these periods can be based on the materials of the multi-layered settlement of Chepkul 5, located on the territory of the Andreevskaya lake system near the city of Tyumen. The purpose of this work is to introduce into…

The settlement of Mergen 6 is located in the Ishim District of the Tyumen Oblast on the northeastern shore of Lake Mergen by the head of the river Mergenka. It was studied in 1990 and 2002-2011 under the direction of V.A. Zakh and S.N. Skochina. On the site, 1494 m2 were examined. The settlement is multi-layered and contains the materials from the Neolithic Period through to the Middle Ages. The research is aimed at the detailed characterisation …
Tarkhan Prison and Surrounding Tatars in Late 17th — Early 18th Centuries
The experience of reconstructing the system of settlement and land use of the Tatar and Russian population in one of the regions of the Lower Tobol region is presented on the basis of an analysis of maps and archival sources of the 17th century. As a result of comparing the map of S. U. Remezov with modern cartographic material, the displacement of the channels of the Tobol, Tura and Tapa and a large water supply of the surrounding water bodies c…
Defensive Lines in System of Russian Settlement in Tobol-Ishim Interfluve at End of 16th — Middle of 18th Centuries
The formation of defensive lines in the Tobol-Ishim interfluve, which marked the advance of the Russian population to the south, is considered. It is proved that the historical processes that took place in Tobolo-Ishimye, the construction of defensive lines, along with the inclusion of existing communications, should be considered as the formation of a structure for the settlement of the Russian and Tatar population in the process of colonization…
Comparative Analysis of the Ring Chronologies of Modern and Archaeological Wood From the Tobol- Ishim Interfluve and the Prospects for Construction of Regional Dendroarchaeological Scales
The article examines a collection of eight ironcollared hooksfrom early medieval burials of archers in the Kuznetsk basin. Theseitems were found on four funerary sites Sapogovo, Shestaki-II, Esaulka and Vaganovo, dated by researchers at different intervals within the 7th –10th centuries. The finds are subject to typological classification, typological-chronological and comparative analysis, as well as ethnocultural characterization. As a result o…
Tarkhansky Ostrog of the 17th−18th centuries
The paper is aimed to introduce into scientific discourse materials of the research of 2020-2021 which con-firm the earlier conjecture on the location of the Tarkhansky Ostrog as on the butte at the confluence of the Tobol and Tap Rivers. The results of the geophysical surveys and excavations on the area of 168 sqm provided conclu-sive evidence towards the correctness of the preliminary argument on the location of the Ostrog and attribution of th…
Incense burners and altar dishes of the Sargatka Culture
The paper concerns the so-called incense burners and small altar dishes found in the burial complexes of the Sargatka Culture in the forest-steppe region of the Western Siberia, as well as in the burials of the Cis-Urals nomads of the 4th-2nd c. BC, which were used for burning and incensing of various substances. Compilation of materials allows forming a clearer view on the possible function of these objects, which is debatable amongst the resear…

Use of Resinous Substances by the Early Neolithic Population In the Forest-Steppe Ishim Area
In this study, the author set out to determine the chemical composition and possible use of a substance, which remnants were found on a tile fragment made of soft brown shist. This item was discovered in the occupa-tion layer of a Neolithic settlement belonging to the Boborykino culture (Mergen 3), located on the terrace of Lake Mergen in the forest-steppe of the Ishim area (south of Western Siberia). By analogy with the complexes of the Boboryki…
The Pottery Complex of the Mergen 6 Early Metal Settlement in the Ishim Area
In ancient times, two regions with different ornamental traditions were formed on the Tobol-Ishim territory. In the Early Neolithic Epoch, the tradition of combed ornaments began to develop in the Tobol area, whereas, at the end of the developed Neolithic period, the tradition of pit-comb pottery began to take shape in the Ishim area and in more eastern regions. These traditions had existed almost without mixing until the third millennium BC. Sub…
Origin of Pottery in Western Siberia (To the Discussion of the Problem)
The problem of the origin of pottery to a large extent determines the choice of directions in the study of Еarly-Neolithic complexes, including the formation and development of Neolithic cultures, their periodization and chronology. We have repeatedly addressed these issues in our previous publications; however, newly-collected information on Еarly-Neolithic settlements in Baraba, along with the publication of radiocarbon dating results obtained …

According to cartographic materials, the island was connected with the mainland in some periods, and other times it was an island. The water level in the lake system could change in the range of 2–2,5 m. The change of the water regime led to landscap…

Woven Belts From Sargat Mound 7 at Chepkul-9
While the number of Early Iron Age mounds excavated in the Western Siberian forest-steppe is considerable, due to the fact that most burials have been looted, as a rule only separate belt parts have been preserved. Therefore, the remains of woven belts found in mound 7 at Chepkul-5 burial ground in the Tobol River basin are highly relevant to the study of such artifacts. In the present article, the belts are described within the context of the en…
