This study examines whether organizations with significant pay gaps along one dimension (gender, migration status, class, etc.) tend to exhibit similarly high inequalities along other dimensions, or whether there is a trade-off between inequality dimensions. Using French administrative data, it estimates correlations between class, gender and migrant workplace earnings gaps, and studies how these gaps also relate to a fourth measure of intra-cate…

  • The Great Separation

    Olivier Godechot, D Tomaskovic-Devey et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Sociology•2024•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 74

Earnings segregation at work is an understudied topic in social science, despite the workplace being an everyday nexus for social mixing, cohesion, contact, claims making, and resource exchange. It is all the more urgent to study as workplaces, in the last decades, have undergone profound reorganizations that could affect the magnitude and evolution of earnings segregation. Analyzing linked employer-employee panel administrative databases, the au…

  • Who Benefits from Migrant and Female Labor? Connecting Wages to Demographic Changes in French Workplaces 1

    Open Access•Matthew Soener, Olivier Godechot et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Forum•2023•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 22

We ask how an increasing share of women or migrants in the workplace affects wages for different groups depending on market‐based or relational outcomes. Using data on nearly every French employee and workplace, we propose four theoretically informed outcomes. We do not find an increase in the share of women or migrants provokes a wage backlash but that these groups instead have some “power in numbers.” Yet, most importantly, our results show dem…

    Open Access•Olivier Godechot, Nils Neumann et al.•ARTICLE•Socio-Economic Review•2023•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 30

The upswing in finance in recent decades has led to rising inequality, but do downswings in finance lead to a symmetric decline in inequality? We analyze the asymmetry of the effect of ups and downs in finance, and the effect of increased capital requirements and the bonus cap on national earnings inequality. We use administrative employer-employee-linked data from 1990 to 2019 for 12 countries and data from bank reports, from 2009 to 2017 in 13 …

We study the influence of the corporate board network on executive pay for 3,395 US firms between 1990 and 2015. We identify three elementary structures through which the interlocking network reflects forms of inter-group reciprocity across firms:restricted exchange, when two executives sit on each other's respective boards;delayed exchange, whenysits on the board ofxafter the end ofx's mandate on the board ofy; andgeneralized exchange, whenxsits…

  • Within-job gender pay inequality in 15 countries

    Open Access•Andrew M Penner, Trond Petersen et al.•ARTICLE•Nature Human Behaviour•2022•Citada por: 11•Referencias: 9

Extant research on the gender pay gap suggests that men and women who do the same work for the same employer receive similar pay, so that processes sorting people into jobs are thought to account for the vast majority of the pay gap. Data that can identify women and men who do the same work for the same employer are rare, and research informing this crucial aspect of gender differences in pay is several decades old and from a limited number of co…

  • Rising between-workplace inequalities in high-income countries

Open Access•D Tomaskovic-Devey, Anthony Rainey et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the National…•2020

Significance Understanding the causes of rising inequality is of concern in many countries. Using administrative data, we find that the share of inequality that is between workplaces is growing in 12 of 14 countries examined, and in no country has it fallen. Countries with declining employment protections see growth in both between- and within-workplace inequalities, but this impact is stronger for between-workplace inequalities. These results su…

On the mergers and acquisitions (M&A) market, buyers and sellers resort to experts in order to secure deals. But as these experts might be prone to opportunism, firms need to find a way to build trust. We identify two trust devices: social ties and public rankings. We explore whether these personal and impersonal devices are substitutes, independent or complementary. We study the French M&A market through a mixed-method approach. We show that bot…

I test these impacts using cross-country panel regressions in OECD countries. …

Driven to maximise bank profits, trading room operators do not find ‘one best way’. Rather they choose among several possible winning strategies: mathematical arbitrage, economic analysis, chartist analysis. These strategies differ sharply from one another in their conception of the market, method, proximi…

L’ouvrage couronne quinze…

    Open Access•Olivier Godechot•ARTICLE•European Journal of Sociology•2014•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 35

Weak ties", a valuable aid in getting a job, are generally work ties. One reason for this feature is not that former colleagues increase one's information but rather that they value the pursuit of past collaboration. We examine the consequence of the collaboration ties hypothesis in the financial industry labor market. In finance, the labor market values the assets that financial operatives take with them from one firm to another, such as knowled…

  • Is finance responsible for the rise in wage inequality in France

    Olivier Godechot•ARTICLE•Socio-Economic Review•2012•Citada por: 32•Referencias: 16

Based on the Déclaration Annuelle de Données Sociales, a very detailed French database on wages, we show that wage inequality started to increase in France in the mid-1990s. This phenomenon is limited to the top end of income distribution and concerns mainly the top 0.1%, whose share of total salaries increased from 1.2 to 2% between 1996 and 2007. This increase in inequality was accompanied by some changes in the social composition of this wage …

  • Hold-up' in Finance

    Olivier Godechot•ARTICLE•Revue Française de Sociologie•2009•Citada por: 14•Referencias: 24

Pay in the financial industry can be very high, and understanding how it gets determined is a key to understanding the wage labor nexus. The fact that some employees acquire “holdup” power is more relevant in explaining this phenomenon than the idea of optimal effort incentives. To better understand the mechanism, an exemplary case of hold-up is studied: two heads of a trading room in a major French bank were granted bonuses of € 10 million and €…

    Olivier Godechot•ARTICLE•Lectures•2006

  • Hold-up en finance

  • Karin Knorr Cetina, Alex Preda, The sociology of financial markets

    Open Access•Olivier Godechot, Alexandra Louvet•ARTICLE•Socio-logos•2008

  • Comment les docteurs deviennent-ils directeurs de thèse

    Olivier Godechot, Alexandra Louvet•ARTICLE•Sociologie•2010•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 6

  • How Did the Neoclassical Paradigm Conquer a Multi-disciplinary Research Institution

    Open Access•Olivier Godechot•ARTICLE•Revue de la régulation•2011

The paper analyses the social conditions of a disciplinary evolution and paradigmatic shift. It is based on the history of economics at the EHESS from 1948 to 2005. An analysis of the PhD committees database enables us to trace the importance and evolution of different economic paradigms within this institution. In the early eighties, the traditional interdisciplinary humanist economics was challenged by a new generation of neoclassical engineer-…

  • The Formation of Academic Relations at ehess

    Olivier Godechot•ARTICLE•Histoire & Mesure•2011•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 8
