  • Cinemas of the Mozambican Revolution

    Open Access•Ros Gray•BOOK•Cinemas of the Mozambican…•2020

A timely analysis that provides a pre-history to current debates on decolonisation, the politics of the moving image, and artistic engagements with anti-colonial archives. In one of the first cultural acts to follow independence in 1975, Frelimo's new socialist government of Mozambique set up a National Institute of Cinema (the INC). In a country where many people had little previous experience of cinema, the INC was tasked to "deliver to the peo…

  • The Wretched Earth

    Ros Gray, Shela Sheikh•ARTICLE•Third Text•2018•Citada por: 13•Referencias: 2

  • Cinema on the cultural front

    Ros Gray•ARTICLE•Journal of African Cinemas•2012•Citada por: 5

During the armed struggle and the revolution that followed independence in Mozambique, film-making was understood as operating on the 'cultural front' of an international struggle against capitalist imperialism. Shortly after independence in 1975, FRELIMO established an Instituto Nacional de Cinema (the INC), and Maputo became a key site in a network of African liberationist film-making that had been emerging since the late 1960s. In a country in…

Gray, with Kodwo Eshun, conceived, edited and wrote the Introduction of this special issue of Third Text. It brings together new international research on the aesthetics and cine-cultural politics of the non-aligned liberation struggles and revolutions of the late 20th century. The collected essays construct an alternative cartography of cine-cultural practices. Gray and Eshun call into question the present political constitution through critical…

  • Chinese Whispers

    Ros Gray•ARTICLE•TEXTILE•2003

This article extends the meaning of textile to explore its relation to the cinematic screen, drawing on the writings of Gilles Deleuze, Julia Kristeva, and others. Reading the textured surfaces of Zhang Yimou's Ju Dou, a beautiful Chinese film set in a fabric-dying factory, the Baroque scenographies of Piranesi, Watteau's fêtes galantes, and Vivienne Westwood's fashion designs, it considers appearance through speech, gesture, and the body adorned…
