Enjoyment and second/foreign language learning
The exponential growth in research on the role of enjoyment in second/foreign language (FL) learning necessitates an updated synthesis and a new approach to overcome the limitations of earlier meta-analyses. Using a three-level meta-analytic approach, the current meta-analysis will review and summarize previous studies up to 2025. Based on a throughout search, we included 80 empirical studies with 43,599 participants with 147 effect sizes. Result…
Do Females Outperform Males on Second/Foreign Language (L2) Achievement? A Meta-Analytical Review across Three Decades
Gender differences in Second/Foreign language (L2) learning have long been a topic of investigation. However, inconsistent results continue to be reported. In this current meta-analysis, we identified 42 empirical studies that appeared between 1998 and 2024, with a cumulated total N = 25,613, from numerous countries. Our goal was to explore gender differences in L2 learning and to investigate possible moderators that explain such differences if f…
Using E-portfolios for learning Chinese
While both the importance of learner engagement and the role of design features have been acknowledged in the literature as key for realizing the potential of e-portfolios in language education, the relationship between learner engagement and teachers’ instructional design awaits further examination. To address this research gap, we conducted a qualitative case study at an international school in Hong Kong within the context of Chinese language e…

The Impact of AI‐Assisted L2 Learning on Learners’ Emotions
The scope of research on AI‐assisted second/foreign language (L2/FL) learning has expanded beyond learning outcomes to focus on learners’ emotional experiences. Despite their proliferation, existing empirical findings are inconsistent, and few studies have systematically synthesized the impacts of AI‐assisted L2 learning on learners’ emotional experiences. This meta‐analysis scrutinized 31 empirical studies with 50 effect sizes to examine the imp…
Sámi CD Productions as Promoting Intangible Cultural Heritage
The number of CDs starring Sámi Indigenous musicians from northern Europe peaked from 2000–2010 due to heavy funding from Norway, Finland and Sweden. Government reports argued that funding such Sámi cultural activities fulfilled the Nordic nations’ cultural heritage obligations under several international conventions, including UNSECO’s Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. Analysed here as expressions of soft power…

The relationship between resilience and second language learning achievement
A Systematic Review on Generative AI in L2 Speaking Development From a Self‐Determination Theory Perspective
Second or foreign language (L2) speaking is a key aspect of L2 competence. While GenAI shows potential to address challenges in L2 speaking development, its role remains insufficiently understood. Self‐Determination Theory (SDT) could explain student language learning engagement. Therefore, this systematic review examines how GenAI affordances can support learners’ SDT needs satisfaction and, in turn, influence their behavioral, cognitive, and em…
Unpacking the factors related to flourishing among bilingual adults in the U.S
Using a positive psychological framework, Broaden-and-Build Theory, we investigated whether and how positive and negative emotions (affective factors) and cognitive flexibility are related to flourishing. Participants are 151 bilingual adults from diverse backgrounds enrolled in a local community college. Results showed that both positive and negative emotions and cognitive flexibility were significantly related to flourishing. More importantly, …

Linking motivation and willingness to communicate in online L3 learning context
The importance of “willingness to communicate” (WTC) in foreign language learning has been widely discussed. However, the current research on WTC mainly focuses on traditional classrooms, and there is insufficient attention to WTC in L3 online learning. This study explored the psychological process among motivation, WTC, foreign language enjoyment (FLE), foreign language classroom anxiety (FLCA), and perceived positive language interaction (PPLI)…

For many years, a cognitive perspective had dominated research in applied linguistics. Around the turn of the millennium researchers became increasingly interested in the role of emotions in foreign language learning and teaching, be…
