On the question of cultural interactions between the Tarim Basin and the Fergana Basin in the Late Bronze Age
During the Late Bronze Age (late 2nd millennium to early 1st millennium BCE), the Tarim Basin and the Fergana Basin served as key nodes of cultural exchange in Eurasia. The mechanisms of their interaction are of great significance for understanding the formation of the prehistoric Silk Road. This paper systematically reviews the material cultural features of three archaeological assemblages from the Tarim Basin (the Xintala, Northern Niya, and Sa…
Ethnobotanical study on wild edible plants in The Kuancheng Traditional Chestnut Eco-Planting System, a globally important agricultural heritage system in Hebei, China
Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS) are living agroecosystems shaped by the coevolution of traditional knowledge (TK) and agrobiodiversity. As a core GIAHS criterion, agrobiodiversity should be assessed beyond crops and livestock to include wild resources that communities regularly use and manage. Wild edible plants (WEPs) and associated TK that guide their identification, harvesting, processing, and habitat care are therefor…

Effects of fundamental social motives on environmental variation of compliance during pandemics
Compliance with epidemic prevention norms has been found to be higher in developing regions than in developed regions; however, the nature and underlying mechanisms remain unclear. We propose that socioeconomic development of environments changes the adaptive benefits of fundamental social motives, especially disease avoidance and familial motives, which shape variations in compliance during pandemics. To examine the effects of these motives on t…

Continuity or change? A role-theoretical analysis of China’s developing country role (2015–2025)
The Chinese government has consistently and explicitly asserted its role as a developing country, which is an important precondition for China’s foreign policy-making. Yet much of the existing research largely assumes this role to be stable in the long term and fails to adequately examine whether and how it has evolved. Using the analytical framework of role change theory, the article examines transcripts of official speeches from China’s Ministr…
Spousal associations between social participation and chronic diseases among Chinese middle-aged and older adults
Objectives: While previous studies have explored the link between a spouse's social participation and their partner's general physical health among Chinese middle-aged and older adults, none have examined its association with partner chronic disease or potential gender differences. Our study aims to address this gap. Methods: This study used data from the 2013, 2015, and 2018 waves of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). T…
Association between oral health and bowel habits
Both chronic constipation and diarrhea were associated with higher risk of poor teeth condition. In the general population and subgroup analyses, individuals with stool frequency around 8-10 times per week demonstrated the lowest risk of poor teeth condition. Stratified analysis indicates that dietary fiber intake and PIR might modify the observed relationship between abnormal bowel habits and teeth condition

Acceptability and willingness of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis amongst female sex workers in China
HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a highly effective prevention method. It is an attractive self-initiated approach to reduce the spread of HIV amongst female sex workers (FSW). PrEP, however, has not yet achieved its potential to reduce HIV infections partially due to a general lack of awareness from women who may benefit. Aims of this cross-sectional study of 1,466 FSW in China were to understand: levels of awareness of and willingness to …
Obesogenic environmental factors of adult obesity in China
The prevalence of obesity is still rising among Chinese adults and may be attributed to environmental factors, which, however, has only been examined in western countries before.
