The Simons Genome Diversity Project
Here we report the Simons Genome Diversity Project data set: high quality genomes from 300 individuals from 142 diverse populations. These genomes include at least 5.8 million base pairs that are not present in the human reference genome. Our analysis reveals key features of the landscape of human genome variation, including that the rate of accumulation of mutations has accelerated by about 5% in non-Africans compared to Africans since divergenc…
A genomic history of Aboriginal Australia
The population history of Aboriginal Australians remains largely uncharacterized. Here we generate high-coverage genomes for 83 Aboriginal Australians (speakers of Pama–Nyungan languages) and 25 Papuans from the New Guinea Highlands. We find that Papuan and Aboriginal Australian ancestors diversified 25–40 thousand years ago (kya), suggesting pre-Holocene population structure in the ancient continent of Sahul (Australia, New Guinea and Tasmania).…
Antiquity and diversity of aboriginal Australian Y ‐chromosomes
OBJECTIVE: Understanding the origins of Aboriginal Australians is crucial in reconstructing the evolution and spread of Homo sapiens as evidence suggests they represent the descendants of the earliest group to leave Africa. This study analyzed a large sample of Y-chromosomes to answer questions relating to the migration routes of their ancestors, the age of Y-haplogroups, date of colonization, as well as the extent of male-specific variation. MET…
Genomic evidence for the Pleistocene and recent population history of Native Americans
Genetic history of Native Americans Several theories have been put forth as to the origin and timing of when Native American ancestors entered the Americas. To clarify this controversy, Raghavan et al. examined the genomic variation among ancient and modern individuals from Asia and the Americas. There is no evidence for multiple waves of entry or recurrent gene flow with Asians in northern populations. The earliest migrations occurred no earlier…
A global reference for human genetic variation
The 1000 Genomes Project set out to provide a comprehensive description of common human genetic variation by applying whole-genome sequencing to a diverse set of individuals from multiple populations. Here we report completion of the project, having reconstructed the genomes of 2,504 individuals from 26 populations using a combination of low-coverage whole-genome sequencing, deep exome sequencing, and dense microarray genotyping. We characterized…
Genetic diversity of Y-chromosome microsatellites in the Fujian Han and the Sichuan Han populations of China
Y-chromosome short tandem repeats (STRs) are potentially useful for forensic, anthropological and evolutionary studies. In this study we chose the loci DYS 19, DYS 388, DYS 389 I, DYS 389 II, DYS 390, DYS 391, DYS 392, DYS 393, DYS 425 and DYS 426. Blood samples were taken from 46 unrelated male individuals from Fujian Han and 43 unrelated males from Sichuan Han in China. DNA was extracted by conventional chelex extraction procedure. PCR was carr…
Study on the Distribution of the MSY2 Polymorphism in 9 Chinese Populations
The distribution of the MSY2 polymorphism in Chinese populations was analyzed by PCR. The results showed that the MSY2*4 allele, whose frequency in the total material was found to be 94.95%, was the common allele, while the distribution of the MSY2*3 allele was significantly different in the 416 tested males from the 9 populations under study. Based on the chi2-analysis, a distinct diversity was found in the non-group populations. Diversities wer…
The Distribution of Six Biallelic Polymorphisms on Non-Recombining Segments of the Y-Chromosome in Five Chinese Populations
Ancient demographic events can be inferred from the distribution of biallelic polymorphisms of NRY. In our study, six Y-biallelic markers were screened in 326 Y-chromosomes from five Chinese populations: Manchu, Fujian Han, Kazak, Bouyei and Sichuan Han. The chi2-test was performed using the SAS package. ARLEQUIN and SPSS programs were used for pairwise Fst's and genetic clusters, respectively. The M9 (G) and RPS4Y (T) polymorphisms show greater …

Distribution of the CCR5 Gene 32-basepair Deletion in 11 Chinese Populations
A mutant allele of the chemokine receptor gene CCR5 bearing a 32-basepair deletion (delta 32CCR5) could increase the resistance to HIV-1 infection or delayed progression to AIDS. The frequency of this mutation is higher in Europeans than in Asians. To investigate the distribution of this polymorphism in China, 715 individuals from 11 Chinese populations were screened by PCR, including the Han and 10 other ethnic groups. The delta 32CCR5 gene was …
