Pragmatics and logical form
This paper argues that a theory of logical form for natural language must be a pragmatic theory, a theory which explains how hearers can reliably compute the logical forms of utterances they hear. The paper sketches a pragmatic theory of logical form, based on the notion of a convention of language, and shows how it can be used to solve some familiar problems in pragmatics
