  • Developing Spanish Language Intervention Content to Address Health Disparities among People Who Use Drugs, and Other Hard-To-Reach Populations

Open Access•Ian David Aronson, Anthony Cramer et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Urban Health•2026

Our team developed content in English and Spanish for a technology-based intervention designed to increase vaccination against COVID-19 among people who inject drugs. From 2022 through 2024, we recruited 545 participants via peer referral, all of whom reported past 90-day injection drug use. Participants completed a tablet-based intervention, and software asked if they would like to vaccinate against COVID. Participants who did not vaccinate at t…

  • Hepatitis C virus risk among young people who inject drugs

    Open Access•Pedro Mateu-Gelabert, Pedro Mateu‐gelabert et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2022

Background Injection drug use (IDU) is the leading risk factor for hepatitis C virus (HCV) transmission in the U.S. While the general risk factors for HCV transmission are known, there is limited work on how these factors interact and impact young people who inject drugs (YPWID). Methods Project data were drawn from a study of 539 New York City (NYC) residents ages 18-29 who were recruited via Respondent-Driven Sampling and, reported past-month n…

  • Why Young Women Who Use Opioids Are at Risk for Rape

    Open Access•Lauren Jessell, Pedro Mateu‐gelabert et al.•ARTICLE•Violence Against Women•2022•Referencias: 4

This study tests a theoretically informed model to understand why women who use opioids (WWUO) are at risk of rape while using drugs. Structured interviews were conducted with 168 WWUO. Three domains were hypothesized to increase risk: the sexually coercive context of drug use, women's social vulnerability, and drug use severity. Logistic regression examined the odds of being raped by domain. One-third of WWUO had been raped while using drugs. Th…

  • Online Medication Assisted Treatment Education for Court Professionals

Harlan Matusow, Andrew Rosenblum et al.•ARTICLE•Substance Use & Misuse•2021

Introduction Although medication-assisted treatment (MAT) effectively treats opioid use disorders (OUD), MAT access is restricted in criminal justice (CJ) settings. Previous studies have documented that stigma and limited knowledge about MAT are prevalent among CJ court personnel. We describe development and pilot testing of an eLearning intervention to improve MAT knowledge and increase MAT referrals in Ohio courts. Methods: Building upon a nati…

  • The Combined Effects of Treatment Intensity, Self-Help Groups and Patient Attributes on Drinking Outcomes

Stephen Magura, Chunki Fong et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Psychoactive Drugs•2005

Better understanding of the diverse factors that predict alcoholism treatment outcomes is essential to improving treatment strategies. Patients accepted for treatment at a multimodality program were interviewed and followed-up at three months and one year after admission. The study tested a set of hypotheses relating to the effects on drinking outcomes of treatment modality, modality matching, treatment retention, aftercare, self-help group parti…

  • Effects of Peer Mentoring on HIV-Affected Youths' Substance Use Risk and Association with Substance Using Friends

Andrew Rosenblum, Stephen Magura et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Service Research•2005•Referencias: 18

This study evaluates the effectiveness of peer mentoring (PM) for urban youth with a HIV-positive parent. Families were randomly assigned with a weighting procedure to a PM program centered around 20 older, trained peer mentors with adult supervision (59 families with 96 eligible youths), or control condition (35 families with 61 eligible youths). The youths were 51% male, 91% minority; mean age was 11.4 years. Outcomes measured one year later we…
