Sex Estimation in the Egyptian Old Kingdom Population (c. 2700–2180 BCE) using Logistic Regression
Sex estimation based on skeletal dimensions can be an important tool in the case of a missing pelvis, but is population specific. The aim is to present logistic regression models for sex estimation specifically for the Old Kingdom population (2700–2180 BCE) of ancient Egypt. The sample includes the skeletal remains of 162 adult individuals, 95 males and 67 females, from two burial sites (Abusir, Giza), whose sex could be estimated based on pelvic…
Patterns of Violence in the Pre-Neolithic Nile Valley
Burial assemblages inform us about the biology of past societies, social relations, and ritual and symbolic behavior. However, they also allow us to examine the circumstances of death and social violence. A high level of intergroup violence among prehistoric hunter-gatherers is well-documented in some times and places but is extremely rare in others. Here we present an analysis of the perimortem injury to skeleton PD8 at the site of Sphinx in Cen…
Notes on the Tomb of Duaptah (As 68a) at Abusir South
Shepespuptah Idu According to Evidence from his Rock-Cut Tomb at Abusir South
The article discusses evidence uncovered by the mission of the Czech Institute of Egyptology, Faculty of Arts, Charles University in Prague at the necropolis of Abusir near Egypt’s capital Cairo. The tomb of Shepespuptah Idu was one of the four rock-cut tombs in the tomb complex of Princess Sheretnebty in Abusir South. It was uncovered in 2012 and its exploration continued until 2013. The identity of the tomb owner is known from hieratic inscript…
Entheseal Changes
Entheseal changes (EC) of skeletons are supposed to reflect the physical activity of our ancestors. Similarly, the elements of the burial rite (e.g. grave goods, burial depth) are presumed to be related to the social status of individuals. The aim of this study was to verify the existence of relationships between EC distribution and archaeological descriptors providing information on social status. Fibrocartilaginous entheses of upper and lower l…
Enthesopathies and activity patterns in the Early Medieval Great Moravian population
Bone remodelling in the areas of entheses is frequently supposed to be associated with physical stress and the activity patterns of ancient populations. The main aim of this study was to analyse the prevalence of enthesopathies among individuals living in different life conditions. A total of 197 individuals from the Early Medieval (9th century) Mikulčice site were analysed for enthesopathies - 117 adult individuals from Mikulčice castle and 80 i…
