  • Macro-Scale Population Patterns in the Kofun Period of the Japanese Archipelago: Quantitative Analysis of a Larger Sample of Three-Dimensional Data from Ancient Human Crania

Open Access•Hisashi Nakao, Akihiro Kaneda et al.•ARTICLE•Humans•2024•Referencias: 21

The present study collected a larger set of three-dimensional data on human crania from the Kofun period (as well as from previous periods, i.e., the Jomon and Yayoi periods) in the Japanese archipelago (AD 250 to around 700) than previous studies. Three-dimensional geometric morphometrics were employed to investigate human migration patterns in finer-grained phases. These results are consistent with those of previous studies, although some new p…

  • Tree ring oxygen isotope dating of wood recovered from a canal in the ancient capital of Japan

Open Access•Masaki Sano, Zhen Li et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2022•Referencias: 4

Trees growing in the lowlands of Japan are not climatically stressed; consequently, ring-width patterns are weakly correlated between different trees. Therefore, dendrochronological studies in Japan based on ring widths rely largely on climatically stressed conifers growing in mountainous regions and/or at higher latitudes. In contrast, oxygen isotope ratios (δ18O) are well-matched between trees, irrespective of climatic stress, indicating that t…

  • Integrated examination and comparison of prospection methods at japanese historical Kiln sites

Open Access•Akihiro Kaneda, Yasushi Nishimura et al.•ARTICLE•ArchéoSciences•2009

Magnetic prospection in Japan has been used widely for surveying archaeological sites with thermoremanent magnetism. Kiln sites are a good target and much data has already been accumulated over a long period of time. Magnetic anomalies are two-dimensional, however, while many archaeologists today require three-dimensional data in order to be able to plan for the excavation and preservation of a kiln site. Our group has therefore examined in detai…
