An Aramaic-Inscribed Cultic Object from Tulûl Mas‘ud, Elyakhin
A copper-alloy object bearing an incised Aramaic inscription in lapidary script was found on the surface, about halfway up the hill of Tulûl Mas‘ud, in the Sharon plain. The object was recently studied by a multidisciplinary research group of specialists in archaeology, epigraphy, forensic science and analytical archaeology to better understand the artifact in its original cultural and spatial setting. The results attest that the object was proba…
A Second Temple Period Inscription on a Stone Ossuary Lid from the City of David, Jerusalem
A stone fragment bearing a Hebrew or Aramaic inscription was discovered in the debris piled up along the Early Roman period Stepped Street in the Tyropoeon Valley, on the west slope of the City of David hill. The inscription preserves part of a list mentioning proper names and sums of money. Similar lists are known from the Second Temple period, commonly interpreted as payment received or rendered from individuals. This is the first inscription t…
Hoard of Ptolemaic Coins found in Murabba‘at Cave II in the Judean Desert
Murabba‘at Cave II is situated in the cliffy area on the northern bank of Naḥal Darga, about 2 km west of the Dead Sea. It is a complex cave formed by the dissolution of Shivṭa-Formation limestone below the water table. Its total length is approximately 90 m and it has three levels. Previous excavations have shown the cave to be one of the richest in the Judean Desert in terms of finds from various periods. Among the many finds was an ancient woo…
Two Iron Age Alphabetic Inscriptions from Tell eṣ-Ṣâfi/Gath, Israel
This paper presents two brief alphabetic inscriptions from Area D in the lower city of Tell eṣ-Ṣâfi/Gath, both deriving from Iron Age IIA contexts. The first is written in an Early Alphabetic script similar to an inscription previously published from the site (Maeir et al. 2008) and is interpreted as being related to the storage of wine. The second, written in later, “formalized” alphabetic script, is quite fragmentary and difficult to decipher, …
Metallurgical Characterization of a Copper-Alloy Aramaic-Inscribed Object from Tulûl Mas‘ud (Elyakhin)
An Aramaic-inscribed object made of copper-alloy was discovered in 1993 in the south-western part of Tulûl Mas‘ud (Moshav Elyakhin) and has recently been studied using an archaeometallurgical approach. Based on visual testing and multifocal light microscopy observation, the object was probably produced in a nearby workshop, with the inscription engraved using a sharp tool during the production process. Given the larger assemblage of inscribed cop…

Aramaic Scribal Exercises of the Hellenistic Period from Maresha: Bowls A and B
In the excavations at Maresha, parts of four bowls with 16 inscriptions written on both the interior and exterior were found. This article discusses seven inscriptions written on two bowls by different hands, thus identified as scribal exercises, in a cursive Aramaic script of the late third or the beginning of the second century B.C.E. The inscriptions on Bowl A include part of a wisdow text, a registration of a daily harvest, and an account. Bo…
