Football Fan Culture as Resistance
Fans Supporting Foodbanks (FSF) has emerged as a response to the impact of the UK’s economic and social welfare crisis. Started by rival Everton F.C. and Liverpool F.C. football fans in 2015, the movement has spread to other fan groups, who collect food and donations to support emergency food provision. This article analyses the forces behind the growth and spread of the movement and, in doing so, addresses the lack of research into sports fan ac…
I have a small window of time left that I'm going to do it
Transitions are a significant part of peoples' lives and perhaps consequently there is an abundance of sports research that focuses on career transitions. The focus of this research has primarily centred on the amateur to professional transition and the end of the professional journey, often referred to as 'retirement'. Whilst other transitions have been presented such as migration across borders, these are often episodic and taken in isolation. …
Fighting for peace in Somalia
Williams begins the book with an African fable telling the story of a lion and antelope: ‘Each morning the lion wakes up and knows that he must run faster than the antelope or he will starve. The antelope wakes up and knows that he must run faster than the lion in order to survive. So whether you are a lion or an antelope, when the morning arrives, you’d better be running’ (p. 1). This anecdote almost perfectly encapsulates the first ten years of…
I Just Go on Wi-Fi
The connection between athletes and technology has developed in recent years, with the focus on how lives are augmented and presented through this relationship. Building on previous reflections concerning the use of information and communication technology (ICT) to support the sometimes fractious experiences of sport migration, we suggest a need to develop our understandings of migrant athletes' use of ICT by interrogating socially-embedded proce…
Mutiny in Côte d'Ivoire
Since 1990, Côte d'Ivoire has experienced over a dozen army mutinies, with three major events occurring in the first half of 2017. This paper explores the underlying causes of these events, considering both this year's mutinies and the state's prior experiences with military insubordination. A review of the events of Côte d'Ivoire's tumultuous 2017 indicates a number of parallels with some of its earlier mutinies, though these more recent events …
An Archive of the (Political) Unconscious
This paper proffers two parallel and related lines of inquiry: (1) it considers the Federal Bureau of Investigation as a paradigm of all archives and, in that light, (2) it examines the meaning of the citations to Jean Renoir in numerous FBI files released under the U.S. Freedom of Information Act. These files provide the evidence of a heretofore ignored political activism on Renoir's part in the United States during the 1940s that must lead us t…
Affective Identities
