  • Methods for the Study of Ancient Hair

  • Late Prehistoric Petroleum Collection in Pennsylvania

    Open Access•Karen A Selsor, Richard R Burky et al.•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•2000•Referencias: 7

Previous reports using archaeological, ethnohistoric, and historic data have proposed that petroleum was extracted by pre-contact aboriginal populations in western Pennsylvania employing wood-lined pits. A suite of AMS-based 14C analyses on total amino acid extracts on nine duplicate samples from a homogenized decadal (10-year) sample of wood taken from a single stake removed from a pit feature at Drake Well Park, Titusville, Pennsylvania, has pe…

  • Radiocarbon Analyses of Modern Organics at Monte Verde, Chile

    Open Access•R E Taylor, C Vance Haynes et al.•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•1999•Citada por: 8•Referencias: 25

Radiocarbon measurements have been obtained on contemporary plant samples collected at the site of Monte Verde, Chile, to examine the possibility that a locall4C reservoir effect impinges on the accuracy of thel4C values obtained on previously recovered archaeological samples. Thel4C activity of the modern plants do not reveal any offset from expected contemporaryl4C values and thus provide no support for a major postulated reservoir effect at le…

  • C Dating of Bone Using γ-Carboxyglutamic Acid and α-Carboxyglycine (Aminomalonate)

    Open Access•Richard R Burky, Donna L Kirner et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1997•Citada por: 8•Referencias: 32

Radiocarbon determinations have been obtained on γ-carboxyglutamic acid [Gla] and α-carboxyglycine (aminomalonate) [Am] as well as acid- and base-hydrolyzed total amino acids isolated from a series of fossil bones. As far as we are aware, Am has not been reported previously in fossil bone and neither Gla nor Am 14 C values have been measured previously. Interest in Gla, an amino acid found in the non-collagen proteins osteocalcin and matrix Gla-p…

  • Radiocarbon Dating of Biochemically Characterized Hair

    Open Access•R E Taylor, P E Hare et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1995•Citada por: 10•Referencias: 18

A series of 14 C determinations have been obtained on hair samples principally from Holocene contexts that have been variously pretreated to examine different means of removing potential contamination. SEM photomicrographs have documented hair surfaces before and after different pretreatments. Amino-acid composition, C/N ratios and δ 13 C values have been obtained to biochemically characterize these samples and provide baseline data for future co…

  • Radiocarbon Dating of Bone Osteocalcin

    Open Access•Henry O Ajie, Isaac R Kaplan et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1992•Citada por: 11•Referencias: 24

Osteocalcin, a non-collagen bone-matrix protein, has been examined as a possible source of autochthonous 14 C data in fossil bones where collagen has been seriously degraded. Extraction procedures for osteocalcin yield a well-characterized product that can be clearly distinguished from collagen. The Gla content indicates that osteocalcin is present in the fossil bones at levels similar to the range present in modern bone. However, it appears to b…
