  • Two Decades of Debate on Meadowcroft Rockshelter

    Open Access•J M Adovasio, D R Pedler et al.•ARTICLE•North American Archaeologist•1999•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 7

Since the publication of the first of more than fifty internally consistent radiocarbon dates from Meadowcroft Rockshelter (36WH297), intense and sometimes acrimonious controversy has swirled around the timing of the initial human occupation of this deeply stratified site. Critics of a late Pleistocene presence at this locality have questioned its stratigraphy, floral and faunal associations, the “character” of its earliest artifact assemblage, a…

  • Never Say Never Again

    Open Access•J M Adovasio, Jack Donahue et al.•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•1992•Citada por: 7•Referencias: 6

Tankersley and Munson (1992) reiterate that the early and, perhaps, some of the later Meadowcroft Rockshelter radiocarbon dates may be contaminated by anthropogenically derived coal or dissolved coal by-products. Their allegations are assessed in light of available data and rejected. Presently, there is no evidence whatsoever for particulate or nonparticulate contamination of any part of the Meadowcroft Rockshelter radiocarbon chronology

  • Radiocarbon Analyses from Cincinnati, Ohio, and Their Implications for Glacial Stratigraphic Interpretations

    Open Access•Thomas V Lowell, Kevin M Savage et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1990

Detailed analysis of a site near Cincinnati, Ohio, shows that 14 C ages of samples in a single geologic unit can have a range of several thousand years and ages from different stratigraphic units can overlap. At the Sharonville site, four 14 C samples from organic silt below glaciogenic deposits have an inverted chronologic sequence, suggesting contamination, but nevertheless they indicate the silt was deposited before 27,000 yr B.P. A stump clus…

  • The Meadowcroft Rockshelter Radiocarbon Chronology 1975-1990

    Open Access•J M Adovasio, Jack Donahue et al.•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•1990•Citada por: 19•Referencias: 6

Ever since the publication of the first of more than 50 internally consistent radiocarbon dates from Meadowcroft Rockshelter (36 WH297), controversy has been generated by frequent assertions that the dates older than 11,000 B.C. have suffered particulate or nonparticulate contamination. Data bearing on these assertions are assessed in the light of accelerator mass spectroscopy (AMS) dates provided by Oxford University. The weight of all data take…

  • The Antiquity of Tlingit Settlement on Admiralty Island, Southeast Alaska

    Open Access•M L Mo, Jon M Erlandson et al.•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•1989•Citada por: 8•Referencias: 6

A series of 29 radiocarbon dates from 11 sites on Admiralty Island span the last 3,200 calendar years. Although our research corroborates many of the results of de Laguna's (1960) earlier work in the area, we find the Tlingit settlement pattern to be at least 1,600 years old, significantly older than previously believed. Dating of a wooden fish weir demonstrates that mass harvesting of salmon has an antiquity of at least 3,000 years

  • Interstadial Conifer Wood from Northern Maine

Open Access•R Scott Anderson, Ronald B Davis et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1988

Conifer wood, probably spruce ( Picea sp.), of middle Wisconsinan age (29,200 ± 500 yr B.P.) was recovered from late-glacial lake sediments from Upper South Branch Pond, Maine. If the wood was derived from a local source, deglaciation of part of northern New England is suggested for this time. The occurrence also has implications for understanding the problem associated with radiocarbon dating of bulk lake sediment containing small amounts of org…

  • Paleosols and prehistoric populations in the high plains

Open Access•T Jorstad, Thomas F Jorstad et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•1986•Citada por: 4

Excavations in 1980–1981 at sites (32MZ319 and 32MZ380) along Cinnamon Creek Ridge in the Little Missouri River Badlands of McKenzie County, North Dakota, unexpectedly revealed at each locality the presence of one or more deeply buried paleosols with associated cultural materials. At both sites, 32MZ319 and 32MZ380, multiple paleosols are present, each of which is terminated by an episode of aeolian deposition. Fifteen radiocarbon dates on these …

  • Radiocarbon Ages from the Lubbock Lake Site

    Vance T Holliday, Eileen Johnson et al.•ARTICLE•Plains Anthropologist•1985•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 3

Forty-eight additional radiocarbon ages became available for Lubbock Lake (Southern High Plains of Texas) during the period 1981-1984. A new but unreliable radiocarbon age is available from Stratum 1 (deposition ending about 11,000 years B.P.; Clovisage occupation). Thirty-three new radiocarbon ages are available from Stratum 2 and suggest the following refinements to the previously established radiocarbon chronology for the deposit: (1) the init…

  • Yes Virginia, It Really is That Old

    Open Access•J M Adovasio, J D Gunn et al.•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•1980•Citada por: 12•Referencias: 1

All of the presently available and processed data from Meadowcroft Rockshelter indicate that the radiocarbon dates for middle and lower Stratum IIa are not discordant with either the associated fauna, flora, and artifacts or with the known geological history of the Cross Creek drainage. Consequently, it is reiterated that the earliest occupations at this locality still represent the best evidence recovered to date for the presence of pre-Clovis o…

  • Late Cenozoic Paleoclimates of the Gaap Escarpment, Kalahari margin, South Africa

    Open Access•Karl W Butzer, Robert Stuckenrath et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1978

The Gaap Escarpment is a dolomite cuesta demarcating the southeast margin of the Kalahari. Since Miocene-Pliocene times, thick masses of lime tufa have repeatedly accumulated at several points along this escarpment, and four regional sequences are described. These allow discrimination of six major depositional complexes, commonly characterized by basal cryoclastic breccias or coarse conglomerates that reflect frost shattering and torrential runof…

  • Vegetation and Associated Environments during the past 14,000 years near Moulton Pond, Maine

    Open Access•Ronald B Davis, Theodore E Bradstreet et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1975

Pollen influx and percentage diagrams were prepared from an 11.4 m core from Moulton Pond, Maine. The pond basin was deglaciated about 14,000 y. a., after which it was located on an island in a sea of subarctic character until about 12,400 y. a. when the surrounding area emerged from the sea. The terrestrial vegetation was tundra until about 10,000 y. a. A change in the tundra vegetation is synchronous with the emergence from the sea, but synchro…

  • Holocene Environmental Changes in the Alpine Zone, Northern San Juan Mountains, Colorado

    Open Access•John T Andrews, PAUL E CARRARA et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1975

Cores from five high alpine basins in the northern San Juan Mountains show several fluctuations in lithology. Typically, peats are interbedded with coarser clastic sediments or else woody peats alternate with fibrous peat. Twenty 14 C dates provide radiometric control. Sediment rates averaged about 2.5 cm/100 yr but varied at the different sites between 1.19 and 50 cm/100 yr. Rates were lower during the middle of the Holocene. Basal radiocarbon d…

    Open Access•Troy L Péwé, André Journaux et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1977

A fine exposure of perennially frozen ice-rich silt and associated flora and vertebrate fauna of late-Quaternary age exists at Mamontova Gora along the Aldan River in central Yakutia, Siberia, U.S.S.R. The silt deposit caps a 50-m-high terrace and consists of three units. An upper layer 1–2 m thick overlies a 10–15-m-thick brownish to black silt layer. The lower silt layer is greenish to gray and about 15 m thick. All the silt is well sorted with…

Meadowcroft Rockshelter is a deeply stratified multicomponent site in Washington County, southwestern Pennsylvania. The 11 well-defined stratigraphic units identified at the site span at least 16,000 years and perhaps 19,000 years of intermittent occupation by groups representing all of the major cultural stages/periods now recognized in northeastern North America. Throughout the extant sequence, the site served as a locus for hunting, collecting…
