Comparative History in Sociological Writings of Max Weber
There have been several contentions, characterisations and controversies over Max Weber's treatment of history in his sociological writings both during his lifetime and after him as well. While some contest his contentions, others doubt the type of English translations made of his German writings. There is a need to take stock of and consolidate the sociologically relevant historical writings of Max Weber in proper perspective. The article raises…
A stable isotope perspective on archaeological agricultural variability and Neolithic experimentation in India
A Typology of Practice
This article presents the results of the analysis of the pottery from the recently excavated site at Mahurjhari in central India. In doing so, it also proposes a new way of looking at archaeological ceramics in South Asia. Here, archaeological ceramics are traditionally defined on the basis of their visual appearance (their colour and texture), which results in a great deal of ambiguity, limits intra-and inter-regional comparison, and impedes a m…
Monsoons, rice production, and urban growth
In discussions of human-environmental dynamics and climate change, treatments of water usually focus on the problem of drought. Monsoon environments constitute a different set of parameters for landscape interactions because of seasonal episodes of water abundance. In this paper, we evaluate the microscale management of routine and anticipated high-water events for the ancient Indian subcontinent, where people used the monsoon cycle to engage in …
Archaeobotanical Investigations into Golbai Sasan and Gopalpur, Two Neolithic-Chalcolithic Settlements of Odisha
This paper presents the results of plant macro-remain and phytolith analyses from two Neolithic-Early Historic mounded settlement sites in Odisha, eastern India: Gopalpur and Golbai Sasan. Macrobotanical and phytolith samples were taken throughout the stratigraphy and the results are presented here. The plant remains confirm the presence of a distinct agricultural economy in Neolithic-Chalcolithic Odisha based on rice ('Oryza sativa'), pulses ('V…
The Extant of Conflict among Marginalised Communities
The task of conflict analysis is to unravel the complex dynamics of interactive processes in order to understand how and why people resort to violence. Based on the field research, this article seeks to analyse the following: (a) to study the causal dynamics and structural characteristics of the manifestation of violent conflict in Kandhamal; (b) to assess the role played by governmental organisations and non-governmental organisations in the pre…
