Både arbeiderbevegelsen og den læstadianske vekkelsen tilbød løsninger for et bedre liv. Begge grupper hadde stor appell i den nordnorske småkårsbefolkningen. Mange tilsluttet seg begge bevegelsenes kamp for bedre kår og større selvbestemmelse. Etter hvert ble folket satt på valg fra ledersjiktet i bevegelsene og måtte velge enten arbeiderbevegelse eller læstadianisme. Det ble et vanskelig valg mellom to goder. Research history earlier than 1960 and doctoral theses are discussed in this issue of Approaching Religion by Roald E. Kristiansen and Bengt-Ove Andreassen.
