  • Population Resettlement in Indigenous and Madhesi Territories

Open Access•Hari Har Jnawali•ARTICLE•The Journal of Race Ethnicity and…•2026

Population resettlement, an integral part of settler colonialism, has also been practiced in post-colonial countries to obtain territorial control over the contested territories. Studies analyze resettlements in relation to settler-colonial and post-colonial states. The resettlement policies of the Nepali state, which has remained independent throughout its history, are outside their attention. Nepal relocated its dominant Hill Hindu high-caste p…

  • Democracy and ethnic autonomy

    Hari Har Jnawali•ARTICLE•Asian Ethnicity•2024•Referencias: 35

Studies suggest that the democratic system constructs a permissive environment for ethnic autonomy. This argument does not, however, fit in the case of Nepal in which the Constitution has institutionalized the democratic system and rejected the Madheshi autonomy. Nepal's constitutional position makes it imperative to examine the limits of the democratic system to address ethnic ambitions. In response, this paper has examined the following questio…

  • Does the Interpretation of Self-determination Affect Autonomy Struggles in Asia

    Hari Har Jnawali•ARTICLE•Ethnopolitics•2023•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 13

The anti-colonial interpretation of the right to self-determination has affected the minorities’ autonomy struggles in China and Nepal. The Tibetans in China and the Madheshis in Nepal urge their governments to recognise their self-determination through autonomy. However, the Chinese and Nepalese governments interpret self-determination as the right to independence and hesitate to provide autonomy. Against this background, this paper examines the…

  • Tibet’s response to state nationalism

    Open Access•Hari Har Jnawali•ARTICLE•Studies in Ethnicity and…•2023•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 33

Taking document analysis as its method, this paper examines the Tibetans’ response to the Chinese state nationalism. Due to the fear of political secession, the Chinese government has stayed silent about the Tibetans’ right to self‐determination and subjected regional ethnic autonomy to the centralised political system. The Chinese authorities continue to dismiss the Tibetans’ nationalist struggles as an imported foreign design and warn the inter…

  • Indian intervention in ethnic movement of Nepal

    Open Access•Hari Har Jnawali•ARTICLE•Ethnicities•2023•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 15

This paper examines the impact of Indian intervention on the Madheshi parties’ claim to self-determination in Nepal. In 2007, the Madheshi parties launched mass protests, demanding the recognition of their self-determination through an autonomous Madheshi province. Mainstream political parties became hesitant to incorporate this demand. The Nepalese government signed agreements with the agitating Madheshis but did not intend to implement its comm…

  • Support of the European Parliament

Hari Har Jnawali•ARTICLE•Nationalism and Ethnic Politics•2022•Citada por: 1

Taking document analysis as its method, this article examines the impact of the European Parliament's (EP) support for the international recognition of Tibetan claims to self-determination. Conceding to various national and international pressures, the Tibetans have switched their demand from independence to autonomy. The EP has supported this demand and urged the Chinese government to recognize self-determination through autonomy and self-govern…

  • Expanding Norm and Lingering Fear

Hari Har Jnawali•ARTICLE•International Journal on Minority…•2021

Taking Nepal as a case, this article argues that the meaning of the right to self-determination, in international norms in particular, has expanded from a right to secession to a right to inclusion, but this expansion has not abated the fear of secession on the ground. Nepal understands the ‘right to self-determination’ only as a right to form a new state, and refrains from including this right as a provision in the new Constitution. The three va…
