The History of the Tajik Civil War, 1992–1997, written by Parviz Mullojonov
From hero worship to organized oblivion
The People's Front of Tajikistan (PFT), one of the parties to the country's civil war, was instrumental in bringing the government of President Emomali Rahmon to power. The article examines the official strategies of memorialization of the PFT from the early 1990s to the present. It discusses the emergence of a canon of the PFT heroes and martyrs and locates it within the nascent national mythology after independence. It argues that the maintenan…
Bandits, warlords, national heroes
The history of the Basmachi movement has occupied a prominent place in the construction of a collective past in Soviet and post-Soviet Tajikistan. This article traces the evolution of its representations in the dominant narrative from the 1950s to the present day. It argues that official discourse in contemporary Tajikistan situates the Basmachis in the mould of a national struggle against Turkic oppression, rather than portraying them, in the ma…

Mackinder on the Roof of the World
This chapter presents a snapshot of geopolitical discourse in Tajikistan, based on fieldwork and interviews conducted in Dushanbe and Khujand in the autumn of 2009. It treats ‘Mackinderian geopolitics’ as the cumulative legacy of British, German, and American political geographers from the first half of the twentieth century informed by Halford Mackinder’s idea of the pivot/heartland.
Omnibalancing in Tajikistan's Foreign Policy
This paper examines the growing alignment between Tajikistan and Iran within the analytical framework of omnibalancing developed by Steven David. It argues that the regime of Tajik President Emomali Rahmon has been pursuing closer relations with Tehran in an effort to balance threats at the system, regional and domestic levels. While cultural factors and affinity based on the idea of Aryanism may have contributed to the rapprochement between Taji…
Changing security threat perceptions in Central Asia
This article discusses the current process of securitisation in Central Asia and identifies its convoluted and faulty nature as a factor impeding collective security action in the region. It uses the Regional Security Complex Theory (RSCT) as an explanatory tool and posits that security discourse in — and about — the five former Soviet republics is dominated by geopolitical grand strategy on the one hand and by particularist concerns about lack o…

Saviours of the nation or robber barons? Warlord politics in Tajikistan
Among all former Soviet Central Asian republics Tajikistan alone has suffered Complete state failure in the course of post-communist transition. The contraction of central government during the final years of perestroika, and especially in the course of a short but brutal 1992 civil war, has produced a situation where large segments of the population have had to depend on various strongmen as far as their livelihood, security and often very exist…
