A Summary Report on Excavation at Marnel Park (Phase 2), Popley, Basingstoke, 2018
An archaeological excavation was undertaken by Cotswold Archaeology in February 2018, at Marnel Park (Phase 2 area), Popley, Basingstoke. The excavation was targeted on a group of later prehistoric pits identified by evaluation. Excavation confirmed a single phase of Late Bronze Age /Early Iron Age activity, represented by a group of eight pits, some of which were intercutting. Three pit fills were notably rich in charcoal and charred plant remai…

A New Perspective on the Late Stone Age of the Northern Ethiopian Highlands

Biggar Common, 1987-93
A fieldwalking exercise by Lanark and District Archaeological Society (LADAS) on moorland recently ploughed for forestry revealed the presence of an extensive Early Neo, Late Neo and EBA artefact scatter, a long mound and five round cairns. Excavation of two of the round cairns revealed them to be simple, single-phase monuments of Beaker date, sealing possibly cultivated soils. The long mound was a complex, multi-phase monument of Early Neo date …
Excavations at St Andrews, Castlecliffe, 1988-90
Excavation to the immediate west of the castle revealed considerable evidence of occupation (probably not continuous) dating from c. 1200 to at least the mid-sixteenth century. Most of the structures uncovered were associated with the medieval burgh not the castle. The first timber buildings gave way to a fourteenth-century tannery, probably when the castle was in ruins and unoccupied. The tannery gave way to two phases of residential buildings, …
The Iron Age Enclosures and Prehistoric Landscape of Sutton Common, South Yorkshire
The Early Iron Age enclosures and associated sites on Sutton Common on the western edge of the Humberhead Levels contain an exceptional variety of archaeological data of importance not only to the region but for the study of later prehistory in the British Isles. Few other later prehistoric British sites outside the East Anglian fens and the Somerset Levels have thus far produced the quantity and quality of organically preserved archaeological ma…
B.I.E.A. Excavations at Aksum, Northern Ethiopia, 1995
This paper describes the results of the first two seasons of fieldwork at Aksum, Northern Ethiopia, particularly the excavation of a middle rank settlement of the Aksumite period
Excavations on Dundee Law, 1993
Reports on Iron Age and post-medieval fortifications on the highest point in Dundee. There are notes on `The samian' by Alan F Leslie (1100--2) and `The environmental studies' by Sheila Boardman & Hazel Moore (1102)

Some excavations on the line of the Antonine Wall 1985-93
Presents the results of twenty-one excavations and watching briefs along the Wall. The alignment of the Wall and the position of fort defences were identified in several places. New information about the superstructure of the Wall, soldiers' diet, and the contemporary environment was obtained. There are specialist reports on: Botanical remains from the inner ditch' by Sheila Boardman & Camilla Dickson (653); `Plant macrofossils' by Sheila Boardma…
Two Orcadian cist burials
Two cists representing common forms of Bronze Age burial monument were excavated in 1992 in Orkney.A short flat cist at Midskaill, on the island of Egilsay, was previously unrecorded and it contained coarse pottery sherds and 'cramp' (vitrified cremation slag). No human bone was found. The second cist, located within a mound at Linga Fiold, Sandwick, on Mainland Orkney, contained human bone and cramp. The Linga Fiold mound is one of a recorded and p…

The excavation of a kerbed cairn at Beech Hill House, Coupar Angus, Perthshire
A much-disturbed kerbed cairn was excavated in the summer of 1989, prior to building work on the site. Two phases of prehistoric activity were discerned. In Phase 1, evidence of pre-cairn agricultural activity was identified in a residual old ground surface which produced a tenuous third millennium BC date.No structural features were identified but settlement in the vicinity was suggested by the presence of flint artefacts and Neolithic pottery.Pha…
Excavation of pits containing grooved ware at Hillend, Clydesdale district, Strathclyde Region
Limited excavations were carried out in advance of pipeline construction in the area between two adjacent cropmark enclosures at Hillend, near Roberton, Clydesdale District, Strathclyde Region. The principal features comprised three pits which produced an assemblage of Grooved Ware, strengthening the possibility that one of the enclosures may have been a henge monument and inviting speculation as to the date and relationship of the other enclosur…
Excavations beside Sruth a' Mhuilinn ('the Mill Stream'), Iona
Excavation beside Sruth a'Mhuilinn recorded a man-made, sub-rectangular pool cut into the gravels of the stream course, as well as a group of large post-pits. The pool was deliberately back-filled in the course of a recent reorganization of the site. There is no salient archaeological interpretation, but discussion considers whether this is the site of a modern horizontal water mill, and weighs this possibility in the light of the well-attested t…
Carronbridge, Dumfries and Galloway
Cropmarks of a square, double-ditched Iron Age/Romano-British enclosure, a Roman temporary camp and another sub-rectangular enclosure were excavated in advance of road building. All the monuments were plough damaged. The square enclosure had three main enclosure phases. It contained six intersecting circular buildings, one of which was surrounded by a large ditch and three large sunken features with complex, charcoal-rich fills. A cobbled surface…
Dalginross and Dun
Limited excavations at Dalginross, Comrie, Perthshire, uncovered an entrance of the Stracathro type and showed that the camp was of two phases of construction; at Dun, Angus, only the enclosure ditches were identified. There are specialist contributions by Stephen Carter `Micromorphological analysis' (283--5) and Sheila Boardman `Charred plant material' (285, 288--9 & microfiche)
The excavation of a souterrain and roundhouse at Cyderhall, Sutherland
The excavation of a newly discovered souterrain on the northern shore of the Dornoch Firth yielded evidence of internal timber supports and a pit dug through the floor. The partial remains of an associated roundhouse and gully represented three occupation levels. Radiocarbon dates ranged from 270+50 BC to 39050 BC uncal
Excavation and Survey of Sub-peat Features of Neolithic, Bronze and Iron Age Date at Bharpa Carinish, North Uist, Scotland
Excavation and survey has revealed evidence of activity around the long cairn, Caravat Barp during the Neolithic, Bronze and Iron Ages. A series of three hearth complexes comprising stone-built hearths within an ash/charcoal spread associated with post-holes and pits were the earliest features on the site. A large sub-rectangular stone enclosure was built soon after peat had begun developing over the area. When the peat had developed to a thickne…
Excavations at Three Early Bronze Age Burial Monuments in Scotland
The excavations of the cemetery groups at Balneaves, Loanleven and Park of Tongland facilitate an examination of many aspects of Bronze Age burial practices in Scotland. They are notable as much for the differences in burial ritual they imply as for the very narrow chronological period in which they were used. The three sites produced a total of seventeen 14 C dates, two of which are aberrant, with means of the remaining fifteen falling within a …
