Textiles and Radiocarbon Dating
Natural textiles provide suitable material for radiocarbon dating. Short-lived organic matter is usually involved and, if 14 C dating is applied to pieces that are stylistically well dated, a better understanding of 14 C dating of this type of material can be gained. This study presents some examples of dating that support the stylistic dates. Repeated analyses illustrate the robustness of the standard treatment applied to the textiles
Roman Ruins as an Experiment for Radiocarbon Dating of Mortar
The remains of Vindonissa, the Roman legionary camp in Switzerland, have been the subject of extensive archaeological studies. Knowledge of the building time plays a role in reconstructions of the history of this site. We radiocarbon dated mortar samples selected from one of the Roman monuments (Westtor) as well as a nearby Medieval monastery. 14 C ages obtained on the first fraction and second fraction of very short dissolution appear close to t…
Anomalous Radiocarbon Ages Found in Campanian Ignimbrite Deposit of the Mediterranean Deep-Sea Core CT85-5
A detailed radiocarbon chronology has been established for the deep-sea core CT85-5 from the Tyrrhenian Sea. This chronology, which is based on the analysis of foraminifera shells, shows a set of reversed 14 C ages for sediments deposited during the eruption of the Campanian Ignimbrite (∼40 ka cal BP). The anomalous young 14 C ages coincide with elevated concentrations of 10 Bc measured in the same core. Although reversals in 14 C ages have been …

Dating Bones near the Limit of the Radiocarbon Dating Method
Preparation of bone material for radiocarbon dating is still a subject of investigation. In the past, the most problematic ages appeared to be the very old bones, i.e. those with ages close to the limit of the dating method. Development of preparative methods requires sufficient amounts of bone material as well as the possibility of verification of the ages. In the peat section at Niederweningen, ZH Switzerland, numerous bones of mammoth and othe…
New Radiocarbon Dates for the Early Neolithic of the Western Mediterranean
Understanding of processes that determined the expansion of farming and animal husbandry in south-western Europe is hampered by poor chronologies of the early Neolithic in this region. This paper presents new radiocarbon dates, which are used to construct such a chronological frame for a regional group of the most important culture of the early Neolithic in the western Mediterranean: the Cardial culture
A New Type of Composite Anchor Dated to the Fatimid-Crusader Period from the Dead Sea, Israel
Two composite anchors of a kind not hitherto identified, each composed of a re-used ashlar block, a wooden shank, two arms and a rope, were discovered recently on the Dead Sea shoreline. Two additional anchor weights of identical type were found in the same region. The two well-preserved anchors were dated to the Fatimid-Crusader period. The shank and the arms were made from local tree species: Christ thorn and tamarisk, and both ropes of date-pa…
Six millennia of atmospheric dust deposition in southern South America (Isla Navarino, Chile)
To characterize dust deposition in southern South America for the Holocene, a 542 cm long core from a peat bog in southern Chile (Oreste bog, Isla Navarino) was studied. Peat formation started ~11 160 14 C yr before present (BP). The titanium (Ti) concentration in bulk peat, combined with dry bulk density, and peat accumulation rate, were used to calculate the mineral accumulation rate (MAR) in the Oreste bog. The distribution of calcium (Ca), ma…

Timing of the late-glacial climate reversal in the Southern Hemisphere using high-resolution radiocarbon chronology for Kaipo Bog, New Zealand
The pattern of climate change in the Southern Hemisphere during the Younger Dryas (YD) chronozone provides essential constraint on mechanisms of abrupt climate change only if accurate, high-precision chronologies are obtained. A climate reversal reported previously at Kaipo bog, New Zealand, had been dated between 13,600 and 12,600 cal yr B.P. and appeared to asynchronously overlap the YD chron, but the chronology, based on conventionally radioca…

Two Ancient Wooden Anchors from Ein Gedi, on the Dead Sea, Israel
Two ancient wooden anchors with ropes, dating to different periods, were found on the western shore of the Dead Sea. The one-armed anchor was dated by 14C to the Late Iron Age—Persian Period, and the second anchor to the Roman Period. The saline water of the Dead Sea preserved the wood and ropes, but corroded almost all the metal parts. A thin black crust of lead and a green crust of copper are the only remains of the collar of the Roman anchor. …
C Ages of Ostracodes from Pleistocene Lake Sediments of the Western Great Basin, Usa—Results of Progressive Acid Leaching
Progressive dissolution experiments were performed on samples of ostracode shells from lacustrine sediments from the western Great Basin to remove contamination of the surface by secondary calcite. The observed age differences between the external and residual fractions were as great as 2000 to 6000 yr. A “plateau” in ages of the last fractions was obtained only for 1 sample; however, results of repeated experiments resulted in very good agreemen…
The Comparison of 14 C Wiggle-Matching Results for the ‘Floating’ Tree-Ring Chronology of the Ulandryk-4 Burial Ground (Altai Mountains, Siberia)
Two independent 14 C data sets of 10 tree-ring samples from the longest master chronology of the Pazyryk cultural complex were obtained and wiggle-matched to the absolute timescale. The results show very good agreement, within 10–15 calendar yr. The Ulandryk-4 burial ground (mound 1) was dated to about 320–310 cal BC, and this is consistent with wiggle-matching of the Pazyryk burial ground date series
Precise radiocarbon dating of Late-Glacial cooling in mid-latitude South America
Variability of atmospheric 14 C content often complicates radiocarbon-based chronologies; however, specific features such as periods of constant 14 C age or steep changes in radiocarbon ages can be useful stratigraphic markers. The Younger Dryas event in the Northern Hemisphere is one of those periods, showing conspicuous 14 C wiggles. Although the origin of those variations is not fully understood, we can make practical use of them and determine…
The Neandertal type site revisited
The 1856 discovery of the Neandertal type specimen (Neandertal 1) in western Germany marked the beginning of human paleontology and initiated the longest-standing debate in the discipline: the role of Neandertals in human evolutionary history. We report excavations of cave sediments that were removed from the Feldhofer caves in 1856. These deposits have yielded over 60 human skeletal fragments, along with a large series of Paleolithic artifacts a…
Persistent Solar Influence on North Atlantic Climate During the Holocene
Surface winds and surface ocean hydrography in the subpolar North Atlantic appear to have been influenced by variations in solar output through the entire Holocene. The evidence comes from a close correlation between inferred changes in production rates of the cosmogenic nuclides carbon-14 and beryllium-10 and centennial to millennial time scale changes in proxies of drift ice measured in deep-sea sediment cores. A solar forcing mechanism therefo…

Radiocarbon Dating of Varve Chronologies
During the last decade, several radiocarbon-dated varve chronologies have been produced. The main goal at first was the extension of the 14 C calibration curve beyond 10,000 BP. This paper aims to discuss varve chronologies of Soppensee and Holzmaar Lakes. Although both chronologies encountered problems, high-resolution 14 C dating and relative varve time have been obtained for events during the Late Glacial

Atmospheric Radiocarbon at the End of the Last Glacial
The main purpose of this work is to reconstruct the atmospheric Δ 14 C in the glacial-postglacial transition, 14,000 – 10,000 BP, a range not covered by the tree-ring calibration curve. We measured 14 C/ 12 C ratios on series of terrestrial macrofossils from sediments of two Swiss lakes. We selected exclusively plant remains of recognizable terrestrial origin that are not affected by hard water and thus reflect atmospheric 14 C concentration. Due…

Radiocarbon Dating the Holocene in the Gościąż Lake Floating Varve Chronology
Terrestrial macrofossils selected from laminated sediment of Lake Gościąż were dated by AMS. Thus, part of the floating varve chronology (FVC) (Goslar et al. 1993) between radiocarbon ages of 4225 ± 45 and 7740 ± 85 bp can be compared and placed on the 14 C calibration curve. As a result of our dating, the top of the FVC is now dated between 3120 and 3300 cal bp, i.e., 3210 ± 90 cal bp

Problems in the Extension of the Radiocarbon Calibration Curve (10–13 kyr BP)
Radiocarbon dating of varved lake sediments shows that, during the Late Glacial (10–12 kyr bp), the offset between the 14 C and the absolute time scales was ca. 1 kyr. Varve counting and accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) dating were used to build absolute and 14 C time scales of sediments from two lakes—Soppensee, Switzerland and Holzmaar, Germany. The resulting chronologies extend back to ca. 12.9 kyr cal bp (12.1 kyr bp) in the case of Soppen…
Anomalous AMS Radiocarbon Ages for Foraminifera from High-Deposition-Rate Ocean Sediments
Radiocarbon ages on handpicked foraminifera from deep-sea cores are revealing that areas of rapid sediment accumulation are in some cases subject to hiatuses, reworking and perhaps secondary calcite deposition. We present here an extreme example of the impacts of such disturbances. The message is that if precise chronologies or meaningful benthic planktic age differences are to be obtained, then it is essential to document the reliability of radi…
Radioisotope Dating with the ETHZ-EN-Tandem Accelerator

The goal of this project is to routinely achieve a 1% accuracy when measuring 14 C/ 12 C ratios with a minimum expenditure of human resources and beam time. The concept is similar to that proposed by Purser and Henley (1978). The early evolution of this dating facility was descri…
Temporal 10 Be Variations in Ice
10 Be (T 1/2 = 1.5·10 6 y) is mainly produced in the atmosphere by cosmic ray spallation reactions on nitrogen and oxygen. About 70 % of the production takes place in the stratosphere. 10 Be becomes attached to aerosols within a very short time. If 10 Be is produced in the stratosphere some latitudinal mixing occurs. Most of the 10 Be is transferred to the troposphere during spring and early summer when, mainly at median latitudes, large stratosp…

Dating Polar Ice by 14 C Accelerator Mass Spectrometry
Results of 14 C/ 12 C ratio measurements on CO 2 extracted from air bubbles in polar ice are presented. The samples investigated originate from the Dye 3, South Greenland, deep ice core and span approximately the last 10,000 years. The results are calibrated with tree-ring records. The 14 C ages are compared with information obtained from seasonal variations of ice-core parameters and rheologic model calculation
Measurement of Small Volume Oceanic 14 C Samples by Accelerator Mass Spectrometry
A technique for 14 C measurement of small volume (0.5L) oceanic water samples by Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) is described. Samples were taken from a CTD/rosette system used for standard hydrographic work. After CO 2 extraction and target preparation, the samples were measured at the Zürich tandem accelerator facility. On the basis of 14 C data from samples collected on a station in the northern Weddell Sea, the precision of the measuremen…
Can the Greenland Climatic Jumps be Identified in Records from Ocean and Land?
Sharp jumps in climate punctuate the records from borings in the Greenland ice cap during the time interval 60,000 to about 20,000 yr ago. Rapid fluctuations are also seen in foraminifera records for cores from the northern Atlantic and in a pollen record from a core from a bog in the Vosges Mountains in France. In this paper we present a new radiocarbon chronology for northern Atlantic deep-sea core V23-81 which permits comparison with the radio…

Late Quaternary Geological History of the Dead Sea Area, Israel
A 34.5 m borehole, which was drilled near the Dead Sea coast (altitude -394 m) in the southern part of the fan delta of Wadi Zeelim, reveals the geological history of that area from the latest Pleistocene to present. The depositional time frame is based on six 14 C dates and two U-Th dates. An erosional (or nondepositional) period is implied by the hiatus between 21,100 yr B.P. (U-Th age, depth 33 m) and 11,315 yr B.P. ( 14 C age, depth 32 m). A …
