Diversity, equity and inclusion work
Purpose I examine if current diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives can actually accomplish what they aim and claim to do. I argue that perforce they cannot, as they remain instruments of capitalist corporations and other similar structures. Design/methodology/approach I draw on a variety of literature, from poetry to theories and to empirical findings. Findings DEI work so far does not live up to its hyped-up claims. It is time for sc…

A collaborative approach to bridging the research-policy gap through the development of policy advice software
We have developed a software-based tool to support a dynamic micro-simulation model of life-course development (to age 13) as an aid to policy makers assessing the impact of policies affecting children. We demonstrate how this approach bridges the research-policy gap by creating: (1) an easy transfer of evidence in a form that policymakers can use (for example, ‘What is the policy influence of X on Y?’); and (2) a ‘pull’ system of knowledge trans…

On Not Knowing Too Much About God
Christianity stands out among the three great Abrahamic religions in its willingness to make extremely precise dogmatic statements about God. The Christians who make these statements have generally regarded them as universally and absolutely true, since they are divinely revealed, or divinely guaranteed interpretations of revealed texts. Of course from the beginning there has not been universal agreement (to put it mildly) among Christians about …

The Dimensions of the Self
The Bhagavad-Gītā is the most important text in the smrti (what is remembered) literature of India, as distinct from the śruti (what is heard) literature which is traditionally regarded as ultimately authoritative. The Bhagavad-Gītā has been assigned a date ranging from the fifth century B.C. to the second century B.C. The Indian religious tradition places the Gītā at the end of the third age of the present cycle of the universe and the beginning…

Was Plotinus a Magician
ISUPPOSE that most Plotinian scholars would agree with judgement of Dodds 1 The creator of Neoplatonism was neither a magician nor pace certain modern writers a theurgist .... Not that he denied efficacy of magic (could any man of third century deny it?). But it did not interest him. He saw in it merely an application to mean personal ends of the true magic which is sum of love and hatred in universe, mysterious and truly admirable Oetax which ma…

The Gods in Plato, Plotinus, Epicurus
The two tractates forming the treatise of Plotinus, called rather misleadingly, to the modern mind, ‘On Providence’, have attracted attention mainly because of the remarkable stress laid in them on the doctrine of the Logos, which marks an interesting development of Plotinus' latest thought and brings the treatise into an apparently close relation to other systems with which the philosophy of Plotinus has little in common. I do not, however, in t…

The Royal University of Malta
It is not my intention in my description of the University of Malta in any way to suggest that this institution is a model, or even a particularly good example of what a Catholic University should be. It is, however, very well worth studying for two reasons. First, because it is unique of its kind, being the only Catholic University (I suppose) in the world which is also a State University supported and controlled by a non-Catholic government. Se…

Catholics and The University
This article should be regarded, perhaps even more than others in this series, as the expression of a very personal point of view. Dons are individualistic people, liable to hold highly original and sharply divergent views on questions both of principle and policy within the university, and I am very conscious that I have no right whatever to speak as representing any considerable body of opinion among Catholic senior members of universities in t…
