Training to Handle Controversial Political Issues Using Virtual Simulations
Despite their educational value, teachers often avoid controversial political issues (CPI). This study explores training pre-service teachers (PSTs) to manage CPI conflicts using virtual simulations. Focusing on one-on-one remedial conversations following classroom disputes, 39 Arab and Jewish PSTs in Israel participated in a six-day program emphasizing communication skills. Qualitative analysis revealed that perceived self-efficacy was central t…
Durable Professionalism in Contested Spaces
This study examines the systemic and political dynamics shaping the professional trajectories of Palestinian educators trained for boundary-crossing roles in Jewish state schools in Israel. While specialized programs successfully cultivated intercultural competence and pedagogical readiness, these gains were undermined by entrenched structural and ideological barriers. 12 in-depth semi-structured interviews with 12 Palestinian teachers were analy…

Teacher responses to explosive student comments
Jewish and Arab lecturers teaching Jewish and Arab teachers how to teach in the ‘other’ society
Interethnic workplace relations in times of heightened social tension
Superdiversity in Israel
Boundary-crossing teachers are teachers who work in schools with different cultural characteristics than their main belonging group. Fifty-six Israeli teachers who identified themselves as religious teachers in secular schools and 41 teachers of different ethnic origin than most other teachers responded to open-ended questions in an online questionnaire. Qualitative thematic analysis revealed that social and professional connections contribute to…
Isaac Levi’s belief change methodology as a way to settle conflicting views
Interest over knowledge
In this endeavour to examine teachers’ willingness to discuss controversial political issues in class, we focused on four variables that received little attention so far: teachers’ vested interest, knowledge, the topic of discussion, and teachers’ ethnicity. 1130 teachers in Israel, 832 Jewish and 298 Arab, answered an online questionnaire that focused on three scenarios of sustainability, multiculturalism, and #MeToo. The issue of multiculturali…

Short communication – Students’ attitudes toward boundary-crossing teachers before and after the May 2021 violence between Israelis and Palestinians
Minority-Group Teachers‘ Different Attitudes toward Controversial Political Issues in Israel (Diferencias actitudinales de los docentes de grupos minoritarios en relación con las controversias polític…
The importance of teachers holding discussions of controversial political issues (CPI) in class is commonly acknowledged, but teachers vary in their willingness to engage in such discussions. The aim of this study is to compare different groups of minority teachers with regards to their attitudes towards CPI. Questionnaires were obtained from 282 teachers belonging to five different minority-teacher groups in Israel. Their attitudes towards condu…
Dialogue over discipline
The education system is drawn in opposite directions both in research and in practice: Outcome-based evaluation and achievements on the one hand and values-based education on the other. The research and theory on the topic is also divided. Values based education is supported almost exclusively by theoretical arguments and qualitative research while achievement is supported by quantitative studies. This study is an attempt to bridge these divides …
Between survival and vision
I’ll Do Business with Anyone”
Given the surplus of Arab teachers and the shortage of Jewish teachers in Israel, the government has adopted the policy of employing Arab teachers in Jewish schools, contrary to the dominant nationalistic agenda. We argue that this low-cost solution meets the criteria for disruptive innovation in that it flies under the radar and has the potential to proliferate and change the existing social order. Through surveys and interviews with boundary-cr…
I am living proof of coexistence’
Arab teachers in Jewish schools (AJ) constitute a unique case of minority teachers. This mixed-methods study set out to examine the school experience of AJ (N = 101) in comparison with two groups: Arab teachers in Arab schools (AA; N = 76) and Jewish teachers in Jewish schools (JJ; N = 99). The questionnaire measured three aspects of the teachers’ experience: motivational, professional and ecological. AJ teachers reported lower levels of professi…
Has religiosity become a key factor in Jewish Israelis' attitudes toward minorities? A call for research
Purpose Attitudes toward minority employees are hard to predict, and there is no enough information about the variables that are associated with increased and decreased prejudice toward them. The Jewish and Arab education systems in Israel are, for the most part, segregated, which may potentially contribute to prejudice and alienation between the two populations. The integration of Israeli–Arab teachers in Jewish schools has been suggested to red…
Parent and Staff Uncertainties Regarding the Philosophy of Early Intervention in a Preschool Autism Program
This study investigated the influences of dominant paradigms in the field of autism on the attitudes and beliefs of stakeholders in an early intervention (EI) program for children with autism. This EI program is based on a developmental approach with the premise that intensive intervention in young children (ages 2–6 years) can change their developmental trajectory given the brain's plasticity. This study was based on 48 interviews with parents a…
