Unequal STEM Opportunities and Pathways of Rural Students Across Geographical Remoteness
Rural students, who represent nearly one‐fifth of the U.S. student population, remain underserved in STEM education and underrepresented in postsecondary STEM degree programs. This study examines how STEM opportunities to learn, motivational beliefs, academic preparation, and college enrollment of rural students vary across geographical remoteness areas, leveraging restricted‐use data from the High School Longitudinal Study of 2009 (HSLS:09) link…
Adolescents' Perceived Opportunities for Creative Thinking, Creative Thinking Competency Belief and Career Interest in STEM
Gender differences in creative thinking competency, career interest, and situated expectancy‐value beliefs in STEM, have been widely studied separately. This study brings these lines of research together by examining gender differences in the association between adolescents' perceived opportunities for creative thinking, creative thinking competency belief, and career interest in STEM, as well as the mediating role of STEM situated expectancy‐val…
High School Course-Completion Trajectories and College Pathways for All
Whereas researchers regard high school math and science coursework as the best indicator of college readiness for students in the United States, computer science coursework and its relationship to college attendance, particularly for minoritized students, have not received due attention despite its root in the mathematical and scientific reasoning ability. We examined students’ high school course completion patterns across subjects and grade leve…
STEM Pathways of Rural and Small-Town Students
Using the nationally representative High School Longitudinal Study of 2009 (HSLS:09), this study documents that rural and small-town students were significantly less likely to enroll in postsecondary STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) degree programs, compared with their suburban peers. This study also shows that schools attended by rural and small-town students offered limited access to advanced coursework and extracurricul…
Leveraging Social Capital to Broaden Participation in STEM
Broadening participation in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) is critical to the nation’s economic growth and national security. In K–12 and higher education, researchers and educators increasingly employ the concept of social capital to develop programs for improving STEM learning, motivation, and participation of young students. STEM social capital in education comprises STEM-oriented resources—whether instrumental, infor…
Cross-Sectional and Longitudinal Disparities in STEM Career Aspirations at the Intersection of Gender, Race/Ethnicity, and Socioeconomic Status
Analyzing the nationally representative High School Longitudinal Study of 2009 (HSLS:09), this study examined the cross-sectional and longitudinal disparities in STEM career aspirations at the intersection of gender, race/ethnicity, and socioeconomic status (SES). Results indicated that female, Black, Hispanic, and low SES students were less likely to show, maintain, and develop an interest in STEM careers during high school years. Compared with …
Remedial Enrollment During the 1st Year of College, Institutional Transfer, and Degree Attainment
This study examined whether remediation enrollment during the 1st year of college influenced individuals’ college transfer and attainment and if effects varied by racial and socioeconomic subgroups. Results based on analysis of the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth of 1997 data indicated that for 2-year college students, remediation enrollment in both mathematics and English improved the likelihood of transferring to a 4-year college and earn…
Cross-Lagged Models of Mathematics Achievement and Motivational Factors Among Hispanic and Non-Hispanic High School Students
This study examines the disparities in, changes in, and longitudinal interrelationships among mathematics achievement and motivational factors for Hispanics and their White, Black, and Asian peers throughout high school. Analyzing the nationally representative High School Longitudinal Study of 2009, regression results indicate that Hispanics trail other racial/ethnic groups in math cognitive and psychosocial factors, except that they outperform t…
The Impact of Being Labeled as a Persistently Lowest Achieving School
Since the No Child Left Behind Act was enacted, grading and labeling of schools as low performing have been increasingly used as means to incentivize failing schools to raise student achievement. Using statewide high school data from Michigan, our regression discontinuity analyses show that the bottom 5% of schools identified as persistently lowest achieving (PLA), which is publicly announced and has consequential accountability, increased their …
Racial and Ethnic Gaps in Postsecondary Aspirations and Enrollment
Objective: To noninvasively investigate the somatotopy of the basal ganglia in humans. Methods: Functional MRI, 1.5-T, was performed on six normal right-handed volunteers during simple acoustically paced motor tasks involving the right hand, foot, and face. Results: In a single-subject analysis, statistical parametric maps showed overlapping activation extending along the anteroposterior extent of the left lentiform nucleus (LLN) for the hand, fo…
Tracing Entrepreneurship Orientation in Adolescence to Business Ownership
Why some individuals choose to become business owners is not entirely clear. Some scholars have argued that a more holistic approach that includes examining personality traits, social context, and developmental periods in the lifespan should provide a deeper understanding of these choices. Tracing the relationship between adolescents' entrepreneurship orientation and their educational aspirations, school engagement, and conformity when in seconda…
