  • Uncovering the genetic pleiotropy between obesity and hypertension in Roma population

    Open Access•Alaitz Poveda, María Eugenia Ibáñez-Zamacona et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologiai Közlemények•2026

Background: Obesity and hypertension disproportionally affect Roma people. Although shared genetic determinants are assumed to influence both blood pressure (BP) and adiposity related phenotypes, their contribution to these two sets of phenotypes in Roma population remains poorly understood. Objective: This study aims to estimate the shared genetic influence between adiposity and BP traits in a high-risk population like the Roma and to assess the…

  • Pilot study on level 3 fingerprint features for their use in forensic identification

    Open Access•María Eugenia Ibáñez-Zamacona, Victor Fernández et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologiai Közlemények•2026

Background: Dermatoglyphs are formed early during prenatal development and, due to their individuality and permanence, are commonly used for identification. When fingertips touch a surface, sweat distributed along the ridges is transferred, producing a latent fingerprint. To use this latent fingerprint for identification purposes, each country establishes a well-defined minimum number of level 2 features (or minutiae). Latent fingerprints obtaine…

  • Ideal body image for the opposite sex and its association with body mass index

Open Access•María Eugenia Ibáñez-Zamacona, Alaitz Poveda et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•2023

This research studied the preferences reported by women and men about their Ideal Body Image for the Opposite Sex (IBIOS), and its association with body mass index (BMI). It also analysed the preferences of each sex for a woman’s ideal body image (W-IBI) and a man’s ideal body image (M-IBI). A total of 450 participants aged 18–70 years with different weights were studied. Their IBIOS was assessed using standard figural stimuli. The sample was div…

  • Body image in relation to nutritional status in adults from the Basque Country, Spain

Open Access•María Eugenia Ibáñez-Zamacona, Alaitz Poveda et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•2020

The aim of this research was to analyse variation in body image perception and satisfaction by age, sex and nutritional status in an adult sample from the Basque Country, Spain. A case-control study was performed for 227 women and 178 men aged 18–70 years. Stunkard’s silhouettes were used to evaluate Current Body Image (CBI) and Ideal Body Image (IBI), as well as dissatisfaction and inconsistency scores. Nutritional status was assessed following …

  • Contribution of obesity associated genetic variants to anthropometric somatotype components

María Eugenia Ibáñez-Zamacona, Alaitz Poveda et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologischer Anzeiger•2019•Citada por: 1

< 0.05). In conclusion, four genetic variants (in or near BDNF, NRXN3, MAP2K5 and FTO) contribute to body shape and composition in the analysed sample.

  • Common variants in BDNF, Faim2, FTO, MC4R, Negr1, and SH2B1 show association with obesity‐related variables in S panish R oma population

Open Access•Alaitz Poveda, María Eugenia Ibáñez-Zamacona et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2014

The results of this study suggest that SNPs in or near six genes (BDNF, FAIM2, FTO, MC4R, NEGR1, and SH2B1) are significantly associated with body fat accumulation and distribution in Roma people. However, the association observed among variants in the first intron of FTO and obesity in European derived populations is not evident in the analyzed Roma sample

  • Obesity and body size perceptions in a Spanish Roma population

Open Access•Alaitz Poveda, María Eugenia Ibáñez-Zamacona et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•2014

This Roma population presents one of the highest rates of obesity worldwide. Although a certain awareness of the correct weight status was appreciated, the inability of Roma individuals to see themselves as overweight or obese may be a significant factor on the high prevalence of obesity in this population

  • Heritability variations of body linearity and obesity indicators during growth

Open Access•Alaitz Poveda, Aline Jelenkovic et al.•ARTICLE•HOMO•2012

  • Heritability and genetic correlations of obesity-related phenotypes among Roma people

Open Access•Alaitz Poveda, Ma Eugenia Ibáñez et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•2012

The study concluded that the Greater Bilbao Roma population is genetically predisposed to abdominal fat distribution. Variation in body mass is highly associated with variation in adiposity. However, overall fatness and adiposity distribution does not seem to share major common genetic factors, although common environmental factors operate between them

  • Quantitative genetics of human morphology and obesity-related phenotypes in nuclear families from the Greater Bilbao (Spain)

Open Access•Aline Jelenkovic, Alaitz Poveda et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•2011

Familial correlations and heritability estimates of body morphology and composition from the Greater Bilbao sample were within the range observed in other studies. The lower heritability detected for central fat has also been found in some other populations, but further investigations in different populations using the same anthropometric traits and estimation methods are needed in order to obtain more robust conclusions

  • Common genetic and environmental factors among craniofacial traits in Belgian nuclear families

Open Access•Aline Jelenkovic, Alaitz Poveda et al.•ARTICLE•HOMO•2010

  • Contribution of Genetics and Environment to Craniofacial Anthropometric Phenotypes in Belgian Nuclear Families

Aline Jelenkovic, Alaitz Poveda et al.•ARTICLE•Human Biology•2008•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 3

In this study we estimate relative genetic and environmental influences on head-related anthropometric phenotypes. The subject group consisted of 119 nuclear families living in Brussels, Belgium, and included 238 males and 236 females, ages 17 to 72 years. Two factor analyses with varimax rotation (the first one related to facial measurements and the second one to overall head morphology) were used to analyze 14 craniofacial size traits. The resu…
