Scoliosis and skeletal muscle mass are strongly associated with low back pain‐related disability in humans
OBJECTIVES: To clarify the potential risk factors and etiology of low back pain (LBP)-related disability, including structural changes of the spine (spinal scoliosis) and body composition components in a population with a high prevalence of LBP. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, two self-reported validated questionnaires were used to collect back pain and disability data in an ethnically homogeneous family-based population sample (N = 1078)…
Is craniofacial morphology and body composition related by common genes
Objectives The overarching hypothesis of the present paper is that ethnically and/or genetically diverse human populations may exhibit similarity in correlations between various aspects of human phenotypes due to the morphological integration process during the ontogenetic stages. To test this we investigated whether an association between craniofacial (CF) features and body composition (BC) variations is present in humans and the extent to which…
Quantitative genetics of circulating Hyaluronic Acid (HA) and its correlation with hand osteoarthritis and obesity-related phenotypes in a community-based sample
This is the first study to report heritability estimates of HA variation and its correlation with obesity-related phenotypes, ADP and RHOA. However, the nature of genetic effects on HA and its correlation with other study phenotypes require further clarification
Quantitative genetic analysis of the body composition and blood pressure association in two ethnically diverse populations
OBJECTIVES: The major aim of this study was to conduct comparative quantitative-genetic analysis of the body composition (BCP) and somatotype (STP) variation, as well as their correlations with blood pressure (BP) in two ethnically, culturally and geographically different populations: Santhal, indigenous ethnic group from India and Chuvash, indigenous population from Russia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Correspondently two pedigree-based samples were c…
Contribution of body composition components and soft‐tissue biochemical factors to genetic variation of body mass index (BMI) in an ethnically homogeneous population
This study clearly suggests that FM and FFM contributed almost equally to BMI variation, and provides evidence that this contribution is caused by common genetic as well as shared environmental and metabolic factors
Implementation of the simplified stochastic model of ageing for longitudinal osteoarthritis data assessment
The stochastic model provides more accurate description of the empiric data compared with the corresponding polynomial model. The model-based individual's estimates could be used as an important tool to fit age-related patterns of the corresponding diseases and conditions
Family-based study of association between ENPP1 genetic variants and craniofacial morphology
The findings obtained in this study suggest that the upstream, promoter and 3' untranslated regions in the ENPP1 locus harbor genetic variants affecting different aspects of craniofacial morphology. Further research is required to validate the relevancy of the potentially functional ENPP1 regions to normal and pathologic craniofacial growth
Relationship between obesity, adipocytokines, and blood pressure
Adipokines may link adipose tissue to the inflammatory, metabolic, and immune dysregulation. The variation of adipokine levels within individuals, intercorrelations, and relationships to well‐established measures of adiposity are incompletely defined. The main goal of the present study was quantitative evaluation of the genetic interrelationships between obesity and adipokines in normal human population. The study sample comprised 272 families of…
Age-related changes and secular trends in hand bone size
Anthropometric and bone-related biochemical factors are associated with different haplotypes of ANKH locus
Taken together, the results show discrimination between the corresponding regions and haplotypes, suggesting trait-specific gene variants that influenced bone-related phenotypic variation in the studied population
Genetic and environmental determinants of hepatocyte growth factor levels and their association with obesity and blood pressure
The results provide evidence that putative genetic factors involved in regulation of HGF variation contribute also significantly to variation of the obesity and BP. It is possible that the familial resemblance for WHR and the SBP correlation in the studied sample is affected substantially by genetic factors regulating circulating HGF levels
Search for Hand Osteoarthritis Susceptibility Locus on Chromosome 6p12.3-p12.1
The existence of osteoarthritis susceptibility loci on chromosome 6 for individuals suffering from hip and knee osteoarthritis has been suggested. We determined whether radiographic hand osteoarthritis in a demographically homogeneous population of European origin can be linked to loci on chromosome 6p12.3-p12.1. Nine single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were genotyped in 764 individuals (members of 189 nuclear and more complex two- or three-ge…
Indices of body composition and chronic morbidity
Our objective was to clarify how different groups of chronic morbidities are associated with indices of body composition, such as body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), waist to hip ratio (WHR), skinfold index (SF), and fat-free mass index (FFMI). Our sample comprised Chuvasha residing in numerous villages in a rural area of the Russian Federation. The investigated cohort included 787 males aged 18-89 years, and 716 females aged 18-90 y…
Variation of skeletal biomarkers of biological aging in a Chuvashian population
Osseographic score (OSS) is a skeletal biomarker of biological aging, based on assessment of the hand's radiographic features. The aims of the present cross-sectional and follow-up study were: 1) to evaluate age-related changes of OSS in a large Chuvashian cohort, and 2) to evaluate sex differences in age-related changes of OSS. This study reports on intersexual differences in the pattern of skeletal aging. The most prominent difference was in th…
Age at menarche in a Chuvashian rural population
Our study demonstrated the certain secular trends of age at menarche in Chuvashian women who matured after World War II. Periods of socio-economic disasters such as war and famine disrupt the secular trend. Our findings also confirm the hypothesis of significant familial influences on menarcheal age
Complex segregation analysis of two principal components derived from horizontal and vertical head size traits
We conclude that head size in horizontal and vertical dimensions is determined by two different major genes together with modest and minor effect genes, the latter being partly shared by HOV and VEC
Association Between Morbidity and Skeletal Biomarkers of Biological Aging
The Osseographic Scoring System (OSS) is a synthetic measure of skeletal aging that combines osteoporotic and osteoarthritic changes of the hand. The OSS is used to evaluate biological age in a population. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the association between certain chronic morbidities and the skeletal biomarker of biological aging. We performed a population-based study on a large sample of individuals who were receiving no medica…
Repeated measurement study of hand osteoarthritis in an apparently healthy Caucasian population
The rate of hand osteoarthritis (OA) progression remains controversial due to a shortage of longitudinal studies. We performed a longitudinal, 8-year follow-up study to evaluate the rate of hand OA progression in men and women. This analysis included the influence of age, sex, anthropometric traits, baseline level of hand OA, smoking, alcohol consumption, and familial effects on the progression rate of hand OA. The collected data included informa…
Quantitative genetic study of head size related phenotypes in ethnically homogeneous Chuvasha pedigrees
A significant genetic component is involved in inter-individual variation and covariation of various studied craniofacial traits
Applications of Pooled DNA Samples to the Assessment of Population Affinities
Pooled DNA samples have been used in association studies of Mendelian disease genes. This method involves combining equal quantities of DNA from patients and control subjects into separate pools and comparing the pools for distributions of genetic markers. In this study identical quantities of DNA from 300 individuals representing 6 populations were pooled and amplified for 296 loci using the touchdown polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method. The …
Patterns of joint distribution in hand osteoarthritis
The most frequent site of osteoarthritis (OA) is the hands, but the pattern of hand OA development remains controversial. Understanding these patterns may assist in evaluating biological aging, determining etiology, and proposing ways of preventing hand OA. We investigated the pattern distribution of OA in hands and the influences of age, sex, and handedness on its development. The study population was comprised of Chuvashians (660 males age 18–8…
Association between somatotypes and blood pressure in an adult Chuvasha population
Individuals of robust physique (with high endomorphy and mesomorphy) showed high mean values of systolic and diastolic BP, whereas the smallest persons had the lowest BP values. These findings suggest the existence of common physiological paths in the development of body physique and blood pressure regulation and may possibly be indicative of the involvement of pleiotropic genetic and/or epigenetic mechanisms in this regulation

Bone Mineral Density is Associated with Estrogen Receptor Gene Polymorphism in Men
In order to identify genetic effects of allelic variation on bone mineral density (BMD), association studies have been performed recently. Examining the relation between PvuII and XbaI restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLPs) at the estrogen receptor (ER alpha) gene and BMD, in women or men, have yielded conflicting results. We analyzed the association between this polymorphism and BMD Z score values of cancellous bone at the 3rd finger i…

Anthropometric multivariate structure and dermatoglyphic peculiarities in biochemically and morphologically different heterozygous groups
Multivariate analysis of the relationship between degree of heterozygosity at four blood group loci and the morphological variability in a human population was carried out. Additionally, the possibility that dermatoglyphic patterns correlate with biochemical and anthropometric variables was also investigated. A strong and significant increase in the frequency of morphologically multimodal individuals was observed, which paralleled the heterozygos…
Reliability of reliability coefficients in the estimation of asymmetry
Although promising to provide insight into the interaction between genotype and environment, investigations into fluctuating asymmetry suffer from a lack of standardization in the reporting of measurement error. In the present paper we show, using both anthropometric and odonto‐metric data, that the use of the reliability coefficient calculated for a bilateral measurement provides no indication of the reliability of the corresponding asymmetry es…

Differential fertility and morphological constitution of spouses
The relationship between fertility (number of children born) and morphological constitution of both spouses was studied in 230 Mexican families. The analysis considered both parental phenotype/genotype and expected (according to the additive model) heterozygosity level of the offspring. The sample was composed of 2 subpopulation -- sedentary and emigrants but the average number of living children in families of emigrant parents and ones remaining…
A morphological approach to the problem of the biological similarity of Jewish and non-Jewish populations
The genetic kinship between various Jewish and non-Jewish groups, from the biochemical standpoint, has been much investigated, frequently with very contradictory conclusions. The present paper reports the results of two comparative analyses of several Jewish and non-Jewish populations as based on morphological measurements of adult males. The first analysis employed data on Jewish and non-Jewish communities from five geographic regions of the wor…
Growth and development of bodyweight, height and head circumference during the first two years of life
Mother-offspring and sib-sib relationships enable estimation of the heritability coefficients (or more accurately, transmissibility coefficients) and the so-called 'genetic correlation' for stature (S), weight (W) and head circumference (HC) in Israeli infants from birth to about two years of age. Heritability coefficients for S and HC show a more or less defined trend towards increase during ontogenetic development. The family resemblance in wei…

Study of genetic variance in the fluctuating asymmetry of anthropometrical traits
We have studied the fluctuating asymmetry (FA) of 8 bilateral morphometric traits in two-parent families, comprising 216 families with one newborn baby, and 60 families with two children (age range 5-18 years). Heritability was assessed by: (1) multiple regression analyses of the children's measurements on the mother's and father's measurements; (2) midparent-child regressions; and (3) sibling correlations. The extent of genetic determination of …
Age-dependent changes in morphometric and biochemical traits
This morphometric investigation was based on an anthropological cross-sectional study of five age groups in Israel: (1) newborn infants; (2) 7-year olds; (3) 18-29 years old; (4) 30-60 years old; and (5) 80 years and older. Fluctuating asymmetry (FA) of eight bilateral traits and coefficients of variation (CV) for 21 standard anthropometric traits were investigated in these groups. The results show that the values of FA and CV increase significan…
Preterm baby delivery
The present paper considers genetic risk factors associated with preterm births. We investigated two main hypotheses, namely: 1) Whether there is a detectable genetic or at least a family resemblance component that may predispose a mother to give birth prematurely and 2) whether the risk to preterm delivery can be predicted in the early stages of pregnancy by means of associated morphometric traits and biochemical genetic markers. Our data and pu…
Relationships between intrapopulational and interpopulational genetic diversity in man
The bottleneck effect (or extended period of reduced population size) is known to increase genetic distance (D) substantially, and this can be a serious factor that disturbs the phylogenetic relationships of populations inferred from genetic distance estimates. The bottleneck effect is also known to be a factor that disturbs the hierarchial relationships of the fixation indices (FST) or the coefficients of gene differentiation (GST) in subdivided…
Morphological traits and common illness in newborn infants
The present study focussed on neonates morbidity in connection with the morphological traits in the individual relative to the population average and in connection with the fluctuating asymmetry (FA) in 8 bilateral traits. The sample comprised two categories of newborn infants: 1) 1088 full term children, in which body weight (W), body height (H) and head circumference (HC) were measured on the day of birth; and 2) 216 infants of various gestatio…
Ethnic and familial factors in early child development
A sample (1,031 individuals) of infants born at varying gestational ages (26–42 weeks) and birth weights (860–4,750 g) was used in a study of 5 developmental traits appearing during the first 2 years of life: the ages at which a child could turn over, sit up, stand up, walk without support, and eruption of the first tooth. The mean age of attaining each developmental milestone was not significantly different among the Jewish ethnic groups represe…
