A Study of the Genetic Relation between Mawayana and Wapishana (Arawakan Family)
This paper presents a first approach at the genetic relation between two Arawakan languages, Mawayana and Wapishana, which have been claimed to form a subgroup in all recent classifications of the family. On the basis of 149 proposed cognate sets, based on data from the available literature and field research on both languages, correspondences are set up and reconstructed proto-phonemes are proposed for the proto-language of what is here called t…
Comparing Rural Multilingualism in Lowland South America and Western Africa
This article explores and compares multilingualism in small-scale societies of Western Africa and Lowland South America. All are characterized by complex and extensive multilingual practices and regional exchange systems established before the onset of globalization and its varying impacts. Through overviews of the general historical and organizational features of regions, vignette case studies, and a discussion of transformative processes affect…
Genealogical relations and lexical distances within the Tupian linguistic family
In this paper we present the first results of the application of computational methods, inspired by the ideas in McMahon & McMahon (2005), to a dataset collected from languages of every branch of the Tupian family (including all living non-Tupí-Guaraní languages) in order to produce a classification of the family based on lexical distance. We used both a Swadesh list (with historically stabler terms) and a list of animal and plant names for resul…
A summary reconstruction of proto-maweti-guarani segmental phonology
This paper presents a succinct reconstruction of the segmental phonology of Proto-Maweti-Guarani, the hypothetical protolanguage from which modern Mawe, Aweti and the Tupi-Guarani branches of the Tupi linguistic family have evolved. Based on about 300 cognate sets from the authors' field data (for Mawe and Aweti) and from Mello's reconstruction (2000) for Proto-Tupi-Guarani (with additional information from other works; and with a few changes con…
A Bayesian Phylogenetic Classification of Tupí-Guaraní
This paper presents an internal classification of Tupí-Guaraní based on lexical data from 30 Tupí-Guaraní languages and 2 non-Tupí-Guaraní Tupian languages, Awetí and Mawé. A Bayesian phylogenetic analysis using a generalized binary cognate gain and loss model was carried out on a character table based on the binary coding of cognate sets, which were formed with attention to semantic shift. The classification shows greater internal structure than…
On the origin of ablaut in the cariban family
In this paper, we undertake the first systematic exploration of pan-Cariban ablaut, a pattern of stem-initial vowel alternation in the paradigm of possessed nouns, inflected verbs, and inflected postpositions. We identify several related, but distinct, ablaut patterns and reconstruct them to sources in two Proto-Carib morphemes, *i- ‘3’ and *j- ‘Relational Prefix’. This then leads us to ervise prior reconstructions of certain personmarking prefix…
Four languages from the lower end of the typology of locative predication
As proposed by Ameka and Levinson (this issue) locative verb systems can be classified into four types according to the number of verbs distinguished. This article addresses the lower extreme of this typology: languages which offer no choice of verb in the basic locative function (BLF). These languages have either a single locative verb, or do not use verbs at all in the basic locative construction (BLC, the construction used to encode the BLF). …

Syntactic Reanalysis in Yukpa (Cariban)
In this paper, I describe two cases of syntactic (construction) reanalysis in the Cariban language Yukpa, spoken in Venezuela and Colombia (South America). In both cases, old nominal constructions acquired main clause verbal status, giving rise to a Progressive and to a Future. The two cases show that Yukpa fits Gildea's (1998) cross-Cariban description, making it look more like a typical member of the family. One of the two cases (the Future) be…
Contrasting contrastive demonstratives in Tiriyó and Lavukaleve
This article explores the contrastive function of demonstratives in two languages, Tiriyó (Cariban, northern Brazil) and Lavukaleve (Papuan isolate, Solomon Islands). The contrastive function has to a large extent been neglected in the theoretical literature on demonstrative functions, although preliminary investigations suggest that there are significant differences in demonstrative use in contrastive versus noncontrastive contexts. Tiriyó and L…
The Southern Cariban Languages and the Cariban Family
This article examines the Southern Cariban languages (e.g., Bakairi, Ikpeng, Ingarikó) in detail, providing a reconstruction of Proto-Southern Cariban and exploring its relationship to other Cariban branches. The authors argue for a closer relationship between Southern Cariban and Northern Cariban, challenging previous classifications that linked Southern Cariban more closely with other branches like Southern Guiana. They present extensive compar…

Natural Concepts' in the Spatial Topologial Domain--Adpositional Meanings in Crosslinguistic Perspective
Most approaches to spatial language have assumed that the simplest spatial notions are (after Piaget) topological and universal (containment, contiguity, proximity, support, represented as semantic primitives suchas IN, ON, UNDER, etc.). These concepts would be coded directly in language, above all in small closed classes suchas adpositions-thus providing a striking example of semantic categories as language-specific projections of universal conc…
Paradox escaped
In two recent issues of this journal, the question of innateness was the topic of an interesting discussion between Hilferty, Valenzuela, and Vilarroya (1998), and Jackendoff (1999). Basically, these two squibs defend opposing viewpoints with respect to what Jackendoff (1996, 1997) had termed the "paradox of language acquisition": how can it be that the linguistic community, despite many decades (or centuries) of efforts, has so far failed to pro…
