  • Determining Sample Size Using Fast and Slow Thinking

    Patrick Dattalo•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Service Research•2018•Referencias: 21

Using SPSS's bootstrapping procedures, this article demonstrates an approach to determining sample size that combines fast (heuristics or rules-of-thumb) and slow (statistical power analysis) thinking to balance statistical power, precision, and practicality. Sample size is determined for six commonly used statistical procedures: independent groups t-test, one-way ANOVA, one-way MANOVA, Pearson's r correlation, linear regression, and logistic reg…

  • Minimizing Social Desirability Bias in Measuring Sensitive Topics

Jennifer Charles, Patrick Dattalo•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Service Research•2018•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 53

Social science research has long been concerned with attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors that are potentially objectionable, immoral, or illegal. These types of topics include, for example, racism, ableism, cheating, and stealing, among others. Referred to as “sensitive topics,” their investigation usually involves questions that require respondents to admit to attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors that violate social norms, making their assessment sus…

  • Determining Sample Size

    Patrick Dattalo•BOOK•Determining Sample Size•2008

Sample size determination is an important and often difficult step in planning an empirical study. From a statistical perspective, sample size depends on the following factors: type of analysis to be performed, desired precision of estimates, kind and number of comparisons to be made, number of variables to be examined, and heterogeneity of the population to be sampled. Other important considerations include feasibility, such as ethical limitatio…

  • Borrowing to Save

    Patrick Dattalo•ARTICLE•Social Work•2007•Referencias: 1

Concern over Social Security's forecasted long-run deficit is occurring at a time when the program has a short-term surplus. One proposed strategy to address this forecasted deficit is to allow the investment of a portion of payroll taxes into private savings accounts (PSAs). The author analyzes recent proposals for PSAs and concludes that PSAs are more likely to be a problem than a solution. Paradoxically, PSAs require the government to borrow t…

  • Parent Involvement in Treatment for ADHD

    Open Access•Jacqueline Corcoran, Patrick Dattalo•ARTICLE•Research on Social Work Practice•2006•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 2

Given high rates of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) diagnosed in children, knowledge of effective treatment is crucial. To this end, a meta-analysis of parent-involved psychosocial treatment was undertaken to determine its effect on a number of outcomes salient to children with ADHD. Sixteen studies met the criteria for the meta-analysis. Findings indicated that the impact of treatment on ADHD was low compared to comparison and/or…

  • Time Series Analysis

    Patrick Dattalo•ARTICLE•Journal of Community Practice•1998•Referencias: 7

This paper introduces community practitioners to important concepts and issues related to time series analysis. The basic components of a time series-trend, cycle, seasonal variation, and stochastic-are described, together with the related issues of sampling rate, autocorrelation, length, and missing observations. Then, a community practice example demonstrates the use of a basic two-step analytical technique. An understanding of these concepts a…

  • A Typology of Child Protective Services Cases Based on Client Presenting Problems

Patrick Dattalo•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Service Research•1995

Child maltreatment often is associated with other personal, interpersonal, and environmental problems. Consequently, the ability to chracterize the type and level of child maltreatment in a family, alone, does not always provide sufficient insight into the family's current problems and service needs. In this study, all the cases sampled had documented instances of child maltreatment, and all had at least one additional presenting problem. Sets of…

  • A Comparison of Discriminant Analysis and Logistic Regression

Patrick Dattalo•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Service Research•1994•Citada por: 3

Logistic regression has emerged as a robust alternative to discriminant analysis. This paper compares both statistical procedures in terms of model specification, assessment of fit, and interpretation. Although both statistics performed well as classification techniques, the logistic regression model was more parsimonious and easier to interpret. The author concludes that when choosing between these two statistics, social work researchers should …

  • Teaching Social Work Students to Analyze and Apply Organizational Theory

Patrick Dattalo•ARTICLE•Journal of Teaching in Social Work•1991•Referencias: 6

This paper describes an approach to introducing social work students to perspectives on organizations based on two change-related aspects of a theory. The first dimension is a theory's emphasis on change versus stability. The second dimension is whether a theory stresses high or low control over change. To be useful, a theory must be restated into propositions to guide intervention. A focus on these two change-related aspects helps students to de…

  • Moving beyond Emergency Shelter

    Patrick Dattalo•ARTICLE•Social Work•1991•Citada por: 1

To address the problems of homeless people, emergency-oriented services were increased during the 1980s. However, too little progress has been made in solving a principal cause of homelessness: the expanding gap between supply and demand for low-income housing. This article analyzes arguments for strengthening the roles of the federal government, states and localities, and the private sector in funding low-income housing. Recommendations include …

  • Homeless Women and Men

    Open Access•Brent B Benda, Patrick Dattalo•ARTICLE•Affilia•1990•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 19

This article reports on a study of 444 homeless persons in Richmond, Virginia, that examined the relationships among homelessness and gender; current and past problems; and various demographic characteristics. The findings support the general theory that a significant proportion of homeless men and women drift down into their current situation after a history of crime, substance abuse, or mental illness. However, the path that leads to homelessne…
