Community Engagement in Long Covid
BACKGROUND: In 2021, the National Institutes of Health launched a multi-centre observational study on long Covid: Researching COVID to Enhance Recovery (RECOVER). Six Boston academic medical centres joined community partners to become the Boston COVID Recovery Cohort (BCRC), a consortium of RECOVER sites. Our consortium developed a community engagement model, and this manuscript shares lessons and recommendations. DESIGN AND PARTICIPANTS: The BCR…
Long Covid impacts
There is a need for multilingual, accessible information about Long COVID symptoms, improved outreach and healthcare delivery, and increased ease of enrollment in long-term disability and economic support programs
Notes from the field
Medical mistrust among the public was amplified during the COVID-19 pandemic due to racial and social inequities in infection rates and misinformation in the media. In Boston, two initiatives were launched by the Boston University Clinical Translational Science Institute (BU CTSI), Boston Medical Center (BMC), community health centers (CHCs), and community organizations to establish longitudinal and authentic partnerships with community-research …
Rural Health Networks
PURPOSE: Rural health networks have the potential to improve health care quality and access. Despite this, the use of network analysis to study rural health networks is limited. The purpose of this study was to use network analysis to understand how a network of rural breast cancer care providers deliver services and to demonstrate the value of this methodology in this research area. METHODS: Leaders at 47 Federally Qualified Health Centers and R…
Using Knowledge Exchange to Build and Sustain Community Support to Reduce Cancer Screening Inequities
The experiences of the PCSS illustrate the benefits of KE for researchers and community members
Using Organizational Network Analysis to Plan Cancer Screening Programs for Vulnerable Populations
Objectives. We examined relationships among organizations in a cancer screening network to inform the development of interventions to improve cancer screening for South Asians living in the Peel region of Ontario. Methods. From April to July 2012, we surveyed decision-makers, program managers, and program staff in 22 organizations in the South Asian cancer screening network in the Peel region. We used a network analytic approach to evaluate densi…
Implementation Science and Its Application to Population Health
Implementation science studies the use of strategies to adapt and use evidence-based interventions in targeted settings (e.g., schools, workplaces, health care facilities, public health departments) to sustain improvements to population health. This nascent field of research is in the early stages of developing theories of implementation and evaluating the properties of measures. Stakeholder engagement, effectiveness studies, research synthesis, …
Using geographic methods to inform cancer screening interventions for South Asians in Ontario, Canada
In this populous region of Ontario, South Asians are more likely to reside in areas with lower rates of appropriate breast, cervical and colorectal cancer screening. We have identified a high-risk area appropriate for both patient- and provider-focused interventions. Geographic Information Systems, in particular LISA analyses, can be invaluable when working with health service and community organizations to define areas with the greatest need for…
Cancer Prevention Among Working Class, Multiethnic Adults
Objectives. We analyzed outcomes from a study that examined social-contextual factors in cancer prevention interventions for working class, multiethnic populations. Methods. Ten community health centers were randomized to intervention or to control. Patients who resided in low-income, multiethnic neighborhoods were eligible; the intervention targeted fruit and vegetable consumption, red meat consumption, multivitamin intake, and physical activity…
PrimeScreen, a brief dietary screening tool
Objective Diet is an important determinant of health outcomes, but physicians have few ways to identify persons with suboptimal diets. The purposes of this study were to examine the reproducibility of a short dietary assessment questionnaire (PrimeScreen) and to compare its results with those of a longer food frequency questionnaire and with plasma levels of selected nutrients. Design Each subject completed two PrimeScreen questionnaires at an in…
