A New Manuscript of “Enki’s Journey to Nibru” From the Twenty-Seventh Year of Ḫammurāpi
This article presents a new manuscript of the Sumerian literary composition “Enki’s Journey to Nibru,” housed in the collection of the Musées royaux d’Art et d’Histoire, Brussels. MRAH O.343 is a two-column, Type I Old Babylonian tablet of uncertain provenance, preserving the complete text of the composition in 127 lines. The colophon permits its dating to the twenty-seventh year of Ḫammurāpi. Analysis of scribal errors suggests that MRAH O.343 w…
Reevaluating the So-called “Reforms of Urukagina” (2)
In his “Reform Texts”, Urukagina of Lagash reports that during the time of his predecessors the people of Lagash had suffered from excessive taxes and encroachments by officials, that the ruling family had appropriated the assets of the temple households and claims to have abolished these conditions. While earlier research took Urukagina’s claims at face value, more recent research denied their actual implementation and regarded the “Reform Texts…
A Sumerian Literary Catalogue in Babylon
This paper presents an Old Babylonian tablet containing a compilation of conventional phrases and lines concerning the moon-god Nanna, some of which represent the incipits of certain literary compositions. The tablet was originally discovered in Babylon during the German excavations conducted between 1899 and 1917. After the abrupt end of the excavations, the tablet was lost but later resurfaced in a modified form; its shortened text was publishe…
Early Babylonian Tablets in the British Museum's Kuyunjik Collection 2
This short paper publishes a new manuscript of the literary composition “Letter from Sîn-šamuḫ to the god Enki” (ETCSL 3.3.19). K.8755 is one of the tablets which proved to be Old Babylonian in spite of their assignment to the British Museum's Kuyunjik Collection. It preserves parts of ll. 8–15 of the composition and probably belonged to a multiple columns tablet. The present paper offers a score transliteration of the lines concerned, based both…
A Praise Poem of Warad-Sîn, King of Larsa, to Nippur
This paper publishes a praise poem of Warad-Sîn, king of Larsa. The manuscript, a one-column tablet, comes from a private collection and is unprovenanced. The text might be an excerpt from a longer composition. Its 20 lines long text praises first Nippur, the city of Enlil, then Warad-Sîn speaks in the first person about the commission given to him by Enlil, about his deeds to the city, and about their permanence. The author of this text appears …
Babel und Bibel 8
This is the eighth volume of Babel und Bibel, an annual of ancient Near Eastern, Old Testament, and Semitic studies. The principal goal of the annual is to reveal the inherent relationship between Assyriology, Semitics, and biblical studies-a relationship that our predecessors comprehended and fruitfully explored but that is often neglected today. The title Babel und Bibel is intended to point to the possibility of fruitful collaboration among th…

In one of his last papers the late Professor van Dijk published a narrative composition about Inana (van Dijk 1998).
