  • New evidence of late Neolithic and early Metal Period agriculture in Turku, southwest Finland

    Open Access•Mia Lempiäinen-Avci, Jouko Pukkila et al.•ARTICLE•Vegetation History and…•2024•Referencias: 14

A re-evaluation of late Neolithic cereal grains, combined with new archaeobotanical data, add to the evidence of late Neolithic and early Metal Period farming in southwest Finland. Earlier indications of late Neolithic cereals at the Niuskala Kotirinne site in Turku are confirmed by new radiocarbon dating results. An early occurrence of Hordeum has also found at a second site nearby, Räntämäki Riihivainio. The finds are discussed in relation to e…

  • Cemetery Considerations

Open Access•Henrik Asplund, Jussi Moisio et al.•ARTICLE•Fennoscandia Archaeologica•2023

Finnish cairn sites are typically defined through the concepts of ‘grave’ or ‘cemetery’, their main purpose being associated with burials. However, when one examines cemetery-related contexts in Iron Age Finland, they exhibit a great deal of variation with regard to the existence of interments, how they can be identified, and how they correlate with other finds. The case study, a re-examination of Cairn 4 at Nokia Viik, excavated in 1986–1987, il…

  • Diverse Economic Patterns in the North Baltic Sea Region in the Late Neolithic and Early Metal Periods

Open Access•Mirva Pääkkönen, Elisabeth Holmqvist et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Archaeology•2019•Citada por: 6•Referencias: 3

Over 120 prehistoric pottery sherds from mainland Finland and the Åland Islands in the north Baltic region were studied for their organic residue content. Preserved fat residues found in these vessels indicated that the food procurement pattern was broad during the Neolithic and Early Metal periods. Based on previous research and these results, it appears that animal husbandry came to Finland with the Corded Ware culture. Groups using the succeed…

  • Widespread exploitation of the honeybee by early Neolithic farmers

    Open Access•M Roffet-Salque, Martine Regert et al.•ARTICLE•Nature•2015

  • Kotirinne — A late Neolithic mixed farming site

Henrik Asplund, Tarja Formisto et al.•ARTICLE•Norwegian Archaeological Review•1989•Referencias: 1

Earlier pollen analyses and palaeoethnobotanical investigations indicate cereal cultivation at the Late Neolithic Kotirinne dwelling site in SW Finland. The site belongs to the Kiukainen Culture (ca. 2000–1300/1000 BC) and is the first within this culture to show indubitable evidence of farming. In the present osteological study, mainly bones of seal and fish have been identified. The site is accordingly interpreted as a mixed sealing‐farming sit…
