  • A palynological study of the Acheulian site of Gesher Benot Ya’aqov, Israel

    Open Access•Willem Van Zeist, Sytze Bottema•ARTICLE•Vegetation History and…•2008•Citada por: 6•Referencias: 5

The results are discussed of the palynological (pollen-analytical) examination of a sediment section in the Hula Valley of northern Israel, with evidence of Acheulian occupation dated to 700,000–800,000 b.p. In general there is a fair agreement between the palynological data and the wood remains identified from the site, but there are also discrepancies, some of which can be explained and others not. Although relatively well represented in the po…

  • Environmental change in Crete

    Open Access•Sytze Bottema, Anaya Sarpaki•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2003•Citada por: 25•Referencias: 7

Palynological investigations were carried out in the coastal lowland of northwestern Crete, in the area of Lake Kournas. Results comprise the longest continuous vegetation record (9000 radiocarbon years) for Crete. From about 8500 to 7500 BP, open deciduous-oak forest occurred and appears to reflect the driest conditions of the Holocene. After 7500 BP, tree-pollen numbers increase. Some of these tree species are thought to be autochthonous, but f…

  • Palynological evidence for late-Holocene human occupation recorded in two wetlands in SW Turkey

    Open Access•Marleen Vermoere, Sytze Bottema et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2002•Citada por: 14•Referencias: 8

Pollen diagrams from mountain lakes and marshes in SW Turkey show evidence of intensive anthro pogenic influence in the landscape between 3500 and 1300 BP. Three cores from within the territory of the classical city Sagalassos (Western Taurus, Pisidia) were palynologically analysed to make a reconstruction of the past vegetation in the territory of Sagalassos and to estimate the impact of its inhabitants on the landscape in Pisidia. Two cores ori…

  • The tempo of Holocene climatic change in the eastern Mediterranean region

    Open Access•Neil Roberts, Jane M Reed et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2001•Citada por: 47•Referencias: 10

This study presents results from a multi-proxy analysis of cores taken in a crater-lake sequence from Eski Acigöl in centr-al Turkey which cover the period from pre-c. 16000 cal. yr BP to the present. The sediments comprise an upper unit of enerally non-laminated, banded to massive silts and peats of mid- to late-Holocene age, overlying a laminated unit of late-Pleistocene to early/mid-Holocenie age. The laminae, comprising mainly aragonite. amor…

  • Man's Role in the Shaping of the Eastern Mediterranean Landscape

    C Vita-Finzi, Claudio Vita‐finzi et al.•ARTICLE•Geographical Journal•1992•Citada por: 129

Revised papers from a symposium entitled The impact of ancient man on the landscape of the Eastern Mediterranean region and the Near East held in Groningen, the Netherlands, March 1989

  • Botanical, malacological and archaeological zonation of settlement deposits at Gomolava

    Open Access•Sytze Bottema, Barbara S Ottaway•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•1982•Citada por: 5

  • A Pollen Diagram from the Syrian Anti Lebanon

    Sytze Bottema•ARTICLE•Paléorient•1975•Citada por: 2

Palynological evidence from the upper reaches of the Barada River provides information on the Upper Post-glacial vegetation history in that part of the Anti Lebanon range. Open forest of deciduous oaks was found here during Medieval time while cedars played a role on higher elevations. Quite recently, about 200 years ago, forest vegetations were destroyed and maize-growing was introduced

  • The Climate, Environment and Industries of Stone Age Greece

    Open Access•Eric Higgs, E S Higgs et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Prehistoric…•1968•Citada por: 15

In the second article of this series, brief mention was made of a cave at Kastritsa, near Lake Ioannina, whose talus had yielded an industry reminiscent of the last phase at the shelter of Asprochaliko. The evidence for an increase in the size of Lake Ioannina during the Last Glaciation was also outlined. The purpose of this paper is to consider the concomitant environmental changes in relation to the evidence for human occupation. Lake Ioannina …
