  • Palaeoecological Insights into Agri-Horti-Cultural and Pastoral Practices Before, During and After the Sasanian Empire

Open Access•Lyudmila Shumilovskikh, Morteza Djamali et al.•CHAPTER•Sasanian Persia•2017

Pollen data obtained from radiocarbon-dated sediments of several peat bogs and lakes located in different parts of Iran and surrounding areas have recently provided invaluable new information on agricultural practices during the Persian empires, from the Achaemenids to the Sasanians. A review of the published and unpublished data has revealed distinct phases of intensified tree cultivation and pastoral activities during this era.

  • Landscape evolution and agro-sylvo-pastoral activities on the Gorgan Plain (NE Iran) in the last 6000 years

    Open Access•Lyudmila Shumilovskikh, Lyudmila S Shumilovskikh et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2016•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 12

The Gorgan Plain (NE Iran) is characterized by fertile soils formed on a loess plateau and is at present primarily exploited for intensive agriculture. However, the timing and intensity of the human impact on the landscape in the past are still unclear. A sediment core, taken from the centre of the eastern Gorgan Plain in the Kongor Lake covering the major part of the Holocene from 6.1 to 0.8 ka (all ages are calibrated before present), has been …

  • Fossil beetles as possible evidence for transhumance during the middle and late Holocene in the high mountains of Talysch (Talesh) in NW Iran

    Philippe Ponel, Valérie Andrieu‐ponel et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Archaeology•2013•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 8

A short sediment core (300 cm) was retrieved from a peaty deposit in the northeastern corner of Lake Neor in NW Iran yielding a 6500-year-old sequence relatively rich in pollen and beetle remains. Beetle assemblages contained a significant amount of coprophagous and coprophilous species all along the core. Pollen spectra suggest an open steppe landscape typical of the modern Irano-Turanian highlands with pollen indicators of agro-pastoral activit…

    Open Access•Philippe Ponel, Mona Court-Picon et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2011

A 1.70 m core extracted from the Lac des Lauzons, Haut Champsaur, French Alps, at 2180 m altitude, provided a detailed Holocene record of beetles, pollen and plant macrofossils, enabling the reconstruction of local palaeoenvironmental changes during the last 10 000 years. After an early phase of colonization by plants and insects, corresponding to the Lateglacial interstadial, a long phase of relative stability of the ecosystems (at least in the …

  • Pollen analysis of coprolites from a late Pleistocene–Holocene cave deposit (Wezmeh Cave, west Iran)

  • Indian Summer Monsoon variations could have affected the early-Holocene woodland expansion in the Near East

    Open Access•Morteza Djamali, Hossein Akhani et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2010•Citada por: 8•Referencias: 6

Postglacial expansion of deciduous oak woodlands of the Zagros—Anti-Taurus Mountains, a major biome of the Near East, was delayed until the middle Holocene at ~6300 cal. yr BP. The current hypotheses explain this delay as a consequence of a regional aridity during the early Holocene, slow migration rates of forest trees, and/or a long history of land use and agro-pastoralism in this region. In the present paper, support is given to a hypothesis t…

  • Notes on Arboricultural and Agricultural Practices in Ancient Iran based on New Pollen Evidence

New pollen evidence from two sites in South-Central Zagros (Lake Maharlou), Southwestern Iran, and Sahand Mountains (Lake Almalou), Northwestern Iran, provide evidence for the emergence of tree cultivation in Southwestern Iran since the 3rd and 2nd millennia BC and upland agricultural activities in Northwestern Iran since 5th to 3rd centuries BC. Juglans cf. regia could have been cultivated firstly at ~ 2500 BC and became more extensively cultiva…

  • A late Pleistocene long pollen record from Lake Urmia, Nw Iran

    Open Access•Morteza Djamali, Jacques‐louis De Beaulieu et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2008

A palynological study based on two 100-m long cores from Lake Urmia in northwestern Iran provides a vegetation record spanning 200 ka, the longest pollen record for the continental interior of the Near East. During both penultimate and last glaciations, a steppe of Artemisia and Poaceae dominated the upland vegetation with a high proportion of Chenopodiaceae in both upland and lowland saline ecosystems. While Juniperus and deciduous Quercus trees…

    Open Access•Emmanuel Gandouin, Philippe Ponel et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2007•Referencias: 21

Lateglacial to Holocene subfossil chironomids from the St-Omer basin at St-Momelin (northern France) were analysed. At the end of the Lateglacial, stratigraphic and chironomid sequences indicate a shallow, oligotrophic and slow-flowing freshwater stream, with abundant aquatic macrophytic vegetation. Cold-water adapted taxa indicate a cold climate. During the early Holocene, from about 9500 to 7700 conventional radiocarbon yr BP, climate improveme…

This paper represents a synthetic overview of the main results of the CNRS Programme " Palaeoenvironments and Hominids ". This project focused on the study of interactions between human occupation and environmental modification, between 500 and 10 kyrs BP, based on multidisciplinary and diachronic studies of key sites in the Somme Basin. Open Access•Valérie Andrieu‐ponel, Valérie Andrieu-Ponel et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2000•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 3

For the first time, a high-resolution pollen/Coleoptera joint analysis is performed on a late Holocene sedimentary sequence located in the Lower Rhône Valley. 14 C dates validated by pollen data show that the bottom of the sequence is contemporaneous with the Greco-Roman period whereas the top is attributed to the present. This sequence yielded very rich pollen and insect assemblages, enabling a detailed reconstruction of the palaeoenvironment su…
