  • Be surface exposure dating of glacier fluctuations on the eastern slope of Mount Geladandong, central Tibetan Plateau

Open Access•Jingdong Zhao, Jinkun Qiu et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2024

  • Timing and extent of Late Pleistocene glaciation in the Chugach Mountains, Alaska

    Open Access•Joshua D Valentino, Joshua Valentino et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2021

Geomorphic mapping, landform and sediment analysis, and cosmogenic 10 Be and 36 Cl ages from erratics, moraine boulders, and glacially polished bedrock help define the timing of the Wisconsinan glaciations in the Chugach Mountains of south-central Alaska. The maximum extent of glaciation in the Chugach Mountains during the last glacial period (marine isotope stages [MIS] 5d through 2) occurred at ~50 ka during MIS 3. In the Williwaw Lakes valley …

  • Climate during the Last Glacial Maximum in the Northern Sawatch Range, Colorado, USA

    Open Access•Keith A Brugger, Chester A Ruleman et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary•2019

Temperature-index modeling is used to determine the magnitude of temperature depression in the northern Sawatch Range required to maintain steady-state mass balances of six reconstructed glaciers at their extent during the local Last Glacial Maximum (LLGM), dated at ~21 ka. Assuming no significant differences in precipitation compared to modern values, mean annual temperatures in the region were on average 8.8 + 0.5/– 0.8 °C cooler than they are …

  • Cosmogenic nuclide age estimate for Laurentide Ice Sheet recession from the terminal moraine, New Jersey, USA, and constraints on latest Pleistocene ice sheet history

    Open Access•Lee B Corbett, Paul R Bierman et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2017

The time at which the Laurentide Ice Sheet reached its maximum extent and subsequently retreated from its terminal moraine in New Jersey has been constrained by bracketing radiocarbon ages on preglacial and postglacial sediments. Here, we present measurements of in situ produced 10 Be and 26 Al in 16 quartz-bearing samples collected from bedrock outcrops and glacial erratics just north of the terminal moraine in north-central New Jersey; as such,…

  • Deglaciation of Fennoscandia

Open Access•Arjen P Stroeven, Clas Hättestrand et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Science Reviews•2016

To provide a new reconstruction of the deglaciation of the Fennoscandian Ice Sheet, in the form of calendar-year time-slices, which are particularly useful for ice sheet modelling, we have compiled and synthesized published geomorphological data for eskers, ice-marginal formations, lineations, marginal meltwater channels, striae, ice-dammed lakes, and geochronological data from radiocarbon, varve, optically-stimulated luminescence, and cosmogenic…

  • Timing and climate forcing of volcanic eruptions for the past 2,500 years

Open Access•Michael Sigl, Mai Winstrup et al.•ARTICLE•Nature•2015

  • New cosmogenic burial ages for Sterkfontein Member 2 Australopithecus and Member 5 Oldowan

    Open Access•Darryl E Granger, Ryan J Gibbon et al.•ARTICLE•Nature•2015

  • Cosmogenic nuclide constraints on late Quaternary glacial chronology on the Dalijia Shan, northeastern Tibetan Plateau

Open Access•Jie Wang, Christine Kassab et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2013

Cosmogenic nuclide (CN) apparent exposure dating has become a widely used method for determining the age of glacial landforms on the Tibetan Plateau with > 1200 published ages. We present the first 10 Be exposure ages from the Dalijia Shan, the most northeastern formerly glaciated mountain range on the Tibetan Plateau. The moraine groups identified from field and remote sensing imagery mapping record four glacial events at 37.07 ± 3.70 to 52.96 ±…

  • Importance of sampling across an assemblage of glacial landforms for interpreting cosmogenic ages of deglaciation

    Open Access•Arjen P Stroeven, Derek Fabel et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2011

Deglaciation chronologies for some sectors of former ice sheets are relatively poorly constrained because of the paucity of features or materials traditionally used to constrain the timing of deglaciation. In areas without good deglaciation varve chronologies and/or without widespread occurrence of material that indicates the start of earliest organic radiocarbon accumulations suitable for radiocarbon dating, typically only general patterns and c…

  • Late Quaternary glacial chronology on Nevado Illimani, Bolivia, and the implications for paleoclimatic reconstructions across the Andes

    Open Access•Colby A Smith, Thomas V Lowell et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2011

10 Be terrestrial cosmogenic nuclide surface exposure ages from moraines on Nevado Illimani, Cordillera Real, Bolivia suggest that glaciers retreated from moraines during the periods 15.5–13.0 ka, 10.0–8.5 ka, and 3.5–2.0 ka. Late glacial moraines at Illimani are associated with an ELA depression of 400–600 m, which is consistent with other local reconstructions of late glacial ELAs in the Eastern Cordillera of the central Andes. A comparison of …

  • The role of mass movements on landscape evolution in the Central Karakoram

    Open Access•John F Shroder, Lewis A Owen et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2011

  • Towards defining the transition in style and timing of Quaternary glaciation between the monsoon-influenced Greater Himalaya and the semi-arid Transhimalaya of Northern India

Open Access•Kathryn A Hedrick, Yeong Bae Seong et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2011

  • Quaternary glaciation in the Nubra and Shyok valley confluence, northernmost Ladakh, India

    Open Access•Jason M Dortch, Lewis A Owens et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2010

Three glacial stages (Deshkit 1, Deshkit 2 and Dishkit 3 glacial stages) are identified in the Nubra and Shyok valleys in northernmost Ladakh, northwest India, on the basis of geomorphic field mapping, remote sensing, and 10 Be terrestrial cosmogenic nuclide surface exposure dating. The glacial stages date to ∼ 45 ka (Deshkit 1 glacial stage), ∼ 81 ka (Deshkit 2 glacial stage) and ∼ 144 ka (Deshkit 3 glacial stage). A mean equilibrium line altitu…

  • Last glacial maximum climate inferences from cosmogenic dating and glacier modeling of the western Uinta ice field, Uinta Mountains, Utah

    Open Access•Kurt A Refsnider, Benjamin Laabs et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2008

During the last glacial maximum (LGM), the western Uinta Mountains of northeastern Utah were occupied by the Western Uinta Ice Field. Cosmogenic 10 Be surface-exposure ages from the terminal moraine in the North Fork Provo Valley and paired 26 Al and 10 Be ages from striated bedrock at Bald Mountain Pass set limits on the timing of the local LGM. Moraine boulder ages suggest that ice reached its maximum extent by 17.4±0.5 ka (± 2σ). 10 Be and 26 …

  • Timing of surficial process changes down a Mojave Desert piedmont

    Open Access•Kyle K Nichols, Paul R Bierman et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2007

We measured 10 Be and 26 Al in 29 sediment samples to infer the history and millennial-scale rates of change down a low-gradient piedmont, a common but enigmatic landform that dominates the Mojave Desert. Nuclide data suggest that a large volume of sediment was deposited on the proximal East Range Road piedmont in Fort Irwin, California, ∼ 75,500 yr ago. Since then, this material has been stable or eroding slowly. In contrast, on the distal piedm…

  • Cosmogenic nuclide chronology of pre-last glacial maximum moraines at Lago Buenos Aires, 46 S, Argentina

    Open Access•Michael R Kaplan, Daniel C Douglass et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2005

At Lago Buenos Aires, Argentina, 10 Be, 26 Al, and 40 Ar/ 39 Ar ages range from 190,000 to 109,000 yr for two moraines deposited prior to the last glaciation, 23,000 16,000 yr ago. Two approaches, maximum boulder ages assuming no erosion, and the average age of all boulders and an erosion rate of 1.4 mm/10 3 yr, both yield a common estimate age of 150,000 140,000 yr for the two moraines. The erosion rate estimate derives from 10 Be and 26 Al conc…

  • Lower Pliocene Hominid Remains from Sterkfontein

    Open Access•T C Partridge, Darryl E Granger et al.•ARTICLE•Science•2003

Cosmogenic aluminum-26 and beryllium-10 burial dates of low-lying fossiliferous breccia in the caves at Sterkfontein, South Africa, show that associated hominid fossils accumulated in the Lower Pliocene. These dates indicate that the skeleton StW 573 and newly discovered specimens from Jacovec Cavern have much the same age: approximately 4 million years. These specimens are thus of an age similar to Australopithecus anamensis from East Africa.

  • Late Pleistocene Cosmogenic 36 Cl Glacial Chronology of the Southwestern Ahklun Mountains, Alaska

    Open Access•Jason P Briner, Terry W Swanson et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2001

Thirty-two cosmogenic 36 Cl surface exposure ages constrain the timing of two late Pleistocene glacial advances in the western Ahklun Mountains, southwestern Alaska. Boulders were sampled from one early Wisconsin ( sensu lato ) and six late Wisconsin moraines deposited by ice-cap outlet glaciers and local alpine glaciers. Four moraine boulders deposited during an extensive early Wisconsin ice-cap outlet glacier advance have a mean surface exposur…
