  • Rare Holocene sediment deposits from Sodmein Playa (Eastern Desert, Egypt)—Stratigraphic assessment and environmental setting

Open Access•Felix Henselowsky, Nicole Klasen et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2022•Referencias: 21

Sodmein Playa is one of the rare Pleistocene open‐air sites in the Eastern Desert of Egypt. Based on the associated stone artefact material, it could be assigned to the Middle Stone Age/Last Interglacial. However, it has not yet been possible to clarify whether the sediments at the basin originated during the Pleistocene or later during Holocene wet phases. Our integrative approach combining Optically Stimulated Luminescence chronology, and crypt…

  • Dating dry-stone walls with rock surface luminescence

    Open Access•Lucas Ageby, Diego E Angelucci et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•2022•Citada por: 6•Referencias: 10

Dating the construction of dry-stone walls is challenging since such structures are typically built without any mortar that can be used for dating. Rock surface luminescence dating is a developing dating method that could advance chronological insights from structures constructed using dry-stone techniques. This study explores rock surface luminescence dating by targeting dry-stone walls from two enclosure complexes and a hut located in the pasto…

  • At the edge of the Cantabrian sea. New data on the Pleistocene and Holocene archaeological open-air site of Bañugues (Gozón, Asturias, Spain)

  • The Chronostratigraphy of the Aurignacian in the Northern Carpathian Basin Based on New Chronometric/Archeological Data from Seňa I (Eastern Slovakia)

Open Access•Wei Chu, Ľubomíra Kaminská et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Paleolithic Archaeology•2019•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 17

The northern Carpathian Basin has important geological, paleoenvironmental, and archeological records that are key to our understanding of the first modern human occupation of Europe. However, the nature and timing of hominin settlements in the region during the Late Pleistocene remain poorly understood. New fieldwork at Seňa I, Slovakia, has identified the only known stratified open-air Aurignacian site in the region and assigned the assemblage …

  • The rock shelter Abrigo del Molino (Segovia, Spain) and the timing of the late Middle Paleolithic in Central Iberia

    Open Access•Martin Kehl, David Álvarez-Alonso et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2018

The timing of the late Middle Paleolithic and late disappearance of Neanderthals in the Iberian Peninsula are hotly debated subjects in Paleolithic archeology. Several studies suggested a late survival in South and Central Iberia until about 32 ka, but were probably subject to significant age underestimation due to contamination of dating samples, undiagnostic lithic assemblages, and/or lack of stratigraphic integrity. We conducted a radiocarbon …

  • Testing feldspar and quartz luminescence dating of sandy loess sediments from the Doroshivtsy site (Ukraine) against radiocarbon dating

Open Access•Nicole Klasen, Christa Loibl et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2017

  • Site formation and chronology of the New Paleolithic Site Sima de Las Palomas de Teba, Southern Spain

Open Access•Martin Kehl, Christoph Burow et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2016

The newly identified Paleolithic site Sima de Las Palomas de Teba hosts an almost seven-m-thick sediment profile investigated here to elucidate the rock shelter's chronostratigraphy and formation processes. At its base, the sediment sequence contains rich archeological deposits recording intensive occupation by Neanderthals. Luminescence provides a terminus ante quem of 39.4 ± 2.6 ka or 44.9 ± 4.1 ka (OSL) and 51.4 ± 8.4 ka (TL). This occupation …
