  • Lake level evidence for a mid-Holocene East Asian summer monsoon maximum and the impact of an abrupt late-Holocene drought event on prehistoric cultures in north-central China

    Open Access•Zhiping Zhang, Zhongwei Shen et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2022•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 11

Uncertainty regarding the timing of the highest Holocene water level of enclosed Dali Lake in northern China has led to controversy about whether the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) peaked in the early Holocene or the mid-Holocene. Therefore, a record combining a reliable chronology with unambiguous lake level indicators is essential to resolve the issue. In this study, we established a temporal sequence of well-preserved paleolake shorelines at…

  • Landsat-8

    Open Access•David P Roy, Michael A Wulder et al.•ARTICLE•Remote Sensing of Environment•2014

Landsat 8, a NASA and USGS collaboration, acquires global moderate-resolution measurements of the Earth's terrestrial and polar regions in the visible, near-infrared, short wave, and thermal infrared. Landsat 8 extends the remarkable 40 year Landsat record and has enhanced capabilities including new spectral bands in the blue and cirrus cloud-detection portion of the spectrum, two thermal bands, improved sensor signal-to-noise performance and ass…

  • Oasis evolution processes and mechanisms in the lower reaches of Heihe River, Inner Mongolia, China since 1 ka ago

    Open Access•Hui Zhao, Yongwei Sheng et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2014•Referencias: 2

Two major oases in the lower reaches of Heihe River, Inner Mongolia of China, the desertified ancient Juyanze oasis (AJO) and the modern Ejina oasis (MEO), experienced dramatic environmental changes and human migrations as documented in historic records. The processes and mechanisms of their evolution are the key for us to understand the environmental changes and human activities in this region, yet are still unclear. This study provides an evolu…

  • Downstream Yangtze River levels impacted by Three Gorges Dam

Open Access•Jida Wang, Yongwei Sheng et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2013

Changes in the Yangtze River level induced by large-scale human water regulation have profound implications on the inundation dynamics of surrounding lakes/wetlands and the integrity of related ecosystems. Using in situ measurements and hydrological simulation, this study reveals an altered Yangtze level regime downstream from the Three Gorges Dam (TGD) to the Yangtze estuary in the East China Sea as a combined result of (i) TGD's flow regulation…

  • Regional lake ice meltout patterns near Barrow, Alaska

Kenneth M Hinkel, Lin Zheng et al.•ARTICLE•Polar Geography•2012

The coastal plain of Arctic Alaska contains many thousands of lakes developed in continuous permafrost, which are ice-free for only 3–4 months each year. The spatial pattern of lake ice meltout for 1870 lakes (>10 ha) in a ~9200 km2 study area near Barrow, Alaska, is analyzed using five Landsat scenes spanning a 35-year record. For each available year, a spectra-based clustering algorithm is used to differentiate water from ice during springtime …

  • Integrated assessments of environmental change on the Tibetan Plateau

    Open Access•Yongwei Sheng, Tandong Yao•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2009

The Tibetan Plateau is one of the Earth's most sensitive regions in responding to climate change due to its extremely high altitude and the presence of permafrost and glaciers. The cryosphere, biosphere and hydrosphere of the plateau have been undergoing significant changes. Due to the low human population density, environmental changes on the plateau are largely driven by natural processes. Thus, the plateau provides a unique and comprehensive s…

  • Disappearing Arctic Lakes

Open Access•Laura C Smith, Yongwei Sheng et al.•ARTICLE•Science•2005

Historical archived satellite images were compared with contemporary satellite data to track ongoing changes in more than 10,000 large lakes in rapidly warming Siberia. A widespread decline in lake abundance and area has occurred since 1973, despite slight precipitation increases to the region. The spatial pattern of lake disappearance suggests (i) that thaw and "breaching" of permafrost is driving the observed losses, by enabling rapid lake drai…

  • A high temporal resolution data set of ERS scatterometer radar backscatter for research in Arctic and sub-Arctic regions

    Open Access•Yongwei Sheng, Laura C Smith et al.•ARTICLE•Polar Record•2002•Referencias: 14

Radar backscatter in Arctic and sub-Arctic regions is temporally dynamic and reflects changes in sea ice, glacier facies, soil thaw state, vegetation cover, and moisture content. Wind scatterometers on the ERS-1 and ERS-2 satellites have amassed a global archive of C-band radar backscatter data since 1991. This paper derives three high temporal resolution data products from this archive that are designed to facilitate scatterometer research in hi…
