  • Challenging perceptions of socio-cultural rejection of a taboo technology

    Open Access•Natalie Boyd Williams, Richard S Quilliam et al.•ARTICLE•Energy Research & Social Science•2022•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 25

Domestic toilet-linked anaerobic digesters (TLADs) recycle organic waste materials, including human excreta (HE), into a clean gaseous fuel and fertiliser product. Socio-cultural resistance is often used to explain local resistance towards TLADs due to the use of HE as a feedstock. However, through qualitative investigation utilising in-depth semi-structured interviews with potential TLAD users in Assam, India, the use of socio-cultural rejection…

  • Trends in Socioeconomic Health Inequalities in Kazakhstan

Лазат Спанкулова, Lazat Spankulova et al.•ARTICLE•Communist and Post-Communist…•2020•Referencias: 7

According to the relative income hypothesis, the health status of a population is determined by its horizontal social and financial conditions, both mutually interrelated factors. As a former republic of the Soviet Union, Kazakhstan is a particularly interesting case in which to explore the impact of health-related inequalities due to economic, sociodemographic, and institutional changes experienced as the country transitioned to independent stat…

  • This restless enemy of all fertility’

    Open Access•Michèle L Clarke, Helen M Rendell•ARTICLE•Transactions of the Institute of…•2014•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 33

Drifting sand has inundated settlements and damaged agricultural land along the coasts of Western Europe for the last 700 years. The need to control sand migration has been an important driver of the management of coastal sand dunes and here we analyse original archival materials to provide new insights into historically changing coastal dune management practices. Records of coastal sand movement in Denmark, The Netherlands, Britain, Ireland and …

  • Responses to climate change and farming policies by rural communities in northern China

  • ‘The air still wasn’t good … everywhere I went I was surrounded’

Alison Edgley, Alison Pilnick et al.•ARTICLE•Health Sociology Review•2011

The study, designed as a pilot, aimed to explore lay perceptions of air quality from participants who were selected to represent three different social categories: age; health status; and geographical location. We compared responses from younger with older participants who held memories of about air quality prior to the Clean Air Act (1956)1. We also explored possible differences in perception due to health status by including some participants w…

  • The impact of North Atlantic storminess on western European coasts

    Open Access•Michèle L Clarke, Helen M Rendell•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2009

  • Effects of storminess, sand supply and the North Atlantic Oscillation on sand invasion and coastal dune accretion in western Portugal

    Open Access•Michèle L Clarke, Helen M Rendell•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2006•Citada por: 6•Referencias: 18

Holocene forested coastal dunes fringe the Atlantic coast of western Portugal. Mapping of dunes in the field and using air photographs shows a range of forms reflecting dominant northwest and westerly onshore wind regimes. Planting of maritime pine forests in the thirteenth and twentieth centuries was initiated because of sand invasion causing problems for human settlement and agriculture. Early Holocene dunes have a well-developed podsol and dat…

  • Late-Holocene sand invasion and North Atlantic storminess along the Aquitaine Coast, southwest France

    Open Access•Michèle Clarke, Michèle L Clarke et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2002•Citada por: 10•Referencias: 3

Holocene forested coastal dunes of different morphology fringe the Atlantic coast of southwest Aquitaine. Infra-red stimulated luminescence (IRSL) dating has been applied to sands from these dunes in the Aquitaine region in order to test the validity of dune-classification theories. The ages obtained from the dunes show three phases of sand invasion and dune development during the late Holocene: 3000-4000 years ago; 900-1300 years ago; 250-550 ye…

  • A revised chronology for aeolian activity in subarctic Fennoscandia during the Holocene

    Open Access•Jukka Käyhkö, Jukka A Käyhkö et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•1999•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 13

Detailed sedimentological studies and parallel sampling for 14 C and infra-red stimulated luminescence age assays were undertaken at six sites lying beyond and below the tree-line with the objective of establishing the historical development of aeolian landforms in Lapland. The main issues were: (a) the timing of dune activity and processes of stabilization; (b) the specific processes responsible for the past and contemporary activity. New data i…

  • Luminescence dating of recent dunes on Inch Spit, Dingle Bay, southwest Ireland

    Open Access•A G Wintle, Michèle L Clarke et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•1998•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 3

Fifteen samples of dune sand, and three samples from a core taken in the beach face, were collected from a sand spit which protrudes into Dingle Bay in Southwest Ireland. The potassium-rich feldspar grains from the samples were dated using a single aliquot luminescence protocol for infrared stimulated luminescence (IRSL) signals. No ages over 600 years were obtained, which demonstrates the youth of the dune forms currently observed. The youngest …

  • Hearing Loss in Aboriginal Children

Open Access•Michèle Clarke, Michèle L Clarke•ARTICLE•The Aboriginal Child at School•1992

I have a particular interest in the topic of hearing impairment within this human development unit of study and specifically I have a concern for the hearing loss of the Aboriginal child at school. The content of this assignment firstly will address the major characteristics associated with hearing impairment and then the condition specific to the Aboriginal community. The second part of this essay will explore the implications in relation to the…
